Not sure I get the "nice, old, mild" part when it comes to the 45 Colt, which I shoot a fair amount of. Loaded with 35g of FFFg behind a 255g cast bullet the 45 Colt is "nice" and it's "old" but it doesn't seem very "mild". A box of 50 and my arthritic shooting hand will ache for a couple of days afterward. Shooting a smokeless equivalent (in velocity) produces much the same experience/feeling...but not as much fun.

Dave All things are relative... Compared to 44 Magnum, 454 Casull, 480 Ruger, 475 Linebaugh, and a host of other big boomers, it is mild.

Dave Dave, I chronographed the .45 Colt with 37grs GOEX 3FG black powder & a 255gr cast bullet from a 5-1/2" bbl. It was 960fps. I backed off to 35grs because I was rounding the nose of the bullet seating it over 37grs. I benchrested that 37gr load & was getting 2-1/2" 5 shot groups @ 25yds. 35gr is just right, but not mild! It will flip the muzzle 90 degrees quicker than you can think it! Glad there is so much interest in this thread. Didn't think I was the only one likening the milder ctgs.😉
