I just wish that .38-40 brass [even Starline's]was a little more robust. I will throw the .38 Super out as another great old round to shoot. I'VE HAD NARY A PROBLEM WITH STARLINE .38-40 BRASS.

So many of these fine old cartridges are still great hunting rounds.
The GT Bullets have worked great for me too. The 38-40 easily matches the 41 Magnum in a strong, modern gun. The 44-40 has no problem reaching 44 Special +P load levels.
In a strong gun, the 32-20 still beats the 327 Federal. I've successfully hunted all sorts of game with modernized 25-20 loads. This includes Springbok in Africa during a 2018 hunt.

My favorite .45 Colt load uses a 200gr LRNFP over 8.0gr. of Unique. Satisfying to shoot but not the least abusive. I have realized a longstanding ambition when I picked up a Colt Police Positive Special in .32-20 last month. Now I need brass and reloading dies... I take a great deal of pleasure shooting .32 S&W Long already, generally with mild loads, and regularly shoot .38 S&W. Fire-breathers have their place, but even then there's little call to go overboard; a 270gr. Keith bullet at 900fps. from a .45 Colt will do for any critter I might run into around here. That's warm enough; going hotter than that is just an exercise in self-abuse.

For really mild I load 32 & 38 S&W... but I do have CAS guns in 32 H&R, 38 Long Colt, 38 / 357, 44 Special / 44 Mag, & 45 Colt, all of them loaded with Trailboss or Unique to mid level loads... also load 44-40 only pretty much in mid level loads this is a 32 S&W converted snubbie, & it's pretty fun to take out & play with... it can handle pretty hot S&W loads which are still quite mild by other cartridge standards this pair of converted Navies in 38 Long Colt are pretty fun... how about an original 44 American Bulldog or a 32-20 conversion how about something new... but could have been old... a mild 475... this 476 WTH... uses a 45 colt revolver, with a 475 barrel added, cylinder is bored through to chamber diameter, and a 475 heal bullet seated into 45 colt cases... just for fun

Love all 22s wife ,kids favorite, 22 mag revolver my pic for small game. 38 has got to be the next step for easy shooting and price of ammo. I love the 45 Colt light for plinking loses that snap once you hit that 850fps. But hunting I do use the Ruger only loads that gun has two attitudes.

It's interesting to see what everyone uses for fun/plinking shooting. Those conversions look like fun.

This thread is so timely. Worked out details with Dave Clements on a 38-40 / 10mm Blackhawk today.
Currently waiting on a two tone 5-Shot 38-40 from Reeder. I can't sit back and let this cartridge go unexplored.

This thread is so timely. Worked out details with Dave Clements on a 38-40 / 10mm Blackhawk today. I don't want to pry...but details man, details! That sounds like a great project. Are you doing this on a mid-frame blackhawk or full size? I do not currently have a .38-40 but I have been thinking seriously of having a conversion done. I have become enamored of the old cartriges (.44-40, .32-20, .38-40 etc.) of late. Good stuff.

How can you not love a good .22? Next up my 2 favorite rounds for the range are .38 Special and .45ACP.

How can you not love a good .22? Next up my 2 favorite rounds for the range are .38 Special and .45ACP. One of the most fun .22 revolvers I've ever had was a Bearcat years ago running a small trapline in Alaska with two other GIs. That gun was perfect for a trapline & a lot of fun to plink with. Yes the good old .22 should be considered a great mild, ctg.

One of my favorites is the .38. I shoot more 38’s than anything else besides .22’s. I have A handful of .32’s which are great but still prefer the 38. There is nothing any of the .32’s can do that I cant do with one of my .357’s.
Next up would be my .44 specials. I shoot it a fair amount.
In all seriousness who really needs to bang away with the big bores? .454’s and up? Great hunting rounds for their intended purposes but not practical at all to shoot daily. But I love the big bores too.

In looking over my log book, which dates back to 1958, I see I fired more, by a healthy margin, .44 Magnum than any other round. But in more recent years I've toned down my shootin' a mite. The .22 is fine, but usually comes only in diminutive little revolvers. Furthermore, since the .22 is not reloadable, it holds scant interest for me. For rapid popping off a few to keep a tin can bouncing, or bouncing a row of cans set up, I prefer the .38 Special in a mild recoiling load. The recoil is sufficient to raise the revolver so as to present the hammer spur to the thumb yet not dislodge the grip on the Single Action revolver. And the empty hulls can be reloaded. Just fun shooting. So for me, the milder center fire cartridges are what it takes to put the sauce on my BBQ.

bob wright, I hear you on the .38s. There is nothing quite as nice as a 4" K frame

bob wright, I hear you on the .38s. There is nothing quite as nice as a 4" K frame Cept maybe a 6" K frame? I love the old pre bull barrel K frames. One of my all time favorites is the 4". My grandpa had one and it was my favorite to shoot until my Uncle from Germany figured out how to import it after grandpa died. I recently acquired another with a fantastic trigger pull. The old K frames with the thin, tapered barrels were made for packing and usually shoot well. Not to long ago I acquired a worn but tight 6" version. It has some cheesy faux stag grips, but I love it. I'll try to find some pics tomorrow.
