Almost all my original threads are about the oldies. 25-20, 32-20, 38-40, 44 Special, 44-40 and 45 Colt. I love to build these in modern, adjustable sight guns. I have got to build me a 32/20. I just gotta have one .Lol. Thinking about seeing how many i can squeeze in to a std Cylinder. Seven...

Hi... I shoot a lot of.38Spl,.44Spl,.45AutoRim and .45Colt. I also shoot a lot of .357Mag,.41Mag and .44Mag. Plus some .22Mag and .22LR in handguns. Not to forget some .375SuperMag, now and then.
Really enjoy the .44Spl and .45Colt with big heavy bullets at moderate velocities, same with the .45AutoRim. Just something about those big, slow moving heavy bullets...

The .38-40 is an old favorite. Most of the time, I load it mild using Green Dot. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time" Nice! I like!

Yup, the milder stuff is just fun to shoot! Brass lasts longer reloading too.

As much as I like the.44-40, I really don't like the added effort required to reload bottle necked cartridges. I guess that's why the .44 Mag was and still is my favorite. I've shot probably ten times as many reduced power loads through mine as I have full power loads. The old 7.5 grains of unique up to 10.0 grains being the most common. These days, my Hawes gets fed a steady diet of 10.5 grains of Power Pistol and a 240 gr FRN. Plenty accurate, plenty of power, and still easy of the hand and revolver.

My all time favorite handgun cartridge is the 38 Special. First introduced to it by Uncle Sam at 18 yoa. I've had one since I was 21. Owned many still have several and enjoy shooting them. My current favorite is a tossup between the Colt Cobra 2017 and the Kimber K6s. The ammo is plentiful and easy to roll your own. Modern defensive loadings are formidable with Buffalo Bore providing a great non+P 158 LSWCHP.
I have a general goof off load and it is a 158 LSWC, 4.5 grains of Unique or Universal and a standard primer. It's helped me win competitions and it is a pleasure to shoot.
I popped a tendon in my strong hand shoulder 4 weeks ago, surgery 3 weeks ago and I have been doing some training with weak hand shooting and the 38 Special has helped.

Praying recovery is quick & complete. I'm another fan of the Buffalo Bore non +P lead SWC HP. It breaks 800fps in a 2".

32-20 is fun. A lot like 327. The difference, at least here at my house, is the .327’s are in cool new guns and the 32-20’s are in cool old guns. There is just something about cool old guns.
The 45 Colt, in mild to wild, remains my favorite. Versatile, easy to load and available in cool old guns and amazing new guns.
Curtis, if your 32-20 desires overtake you, FA can fix the latest adoption up for a few extra coins. If I wasn’t for the darn shipping costs.....

I SPRAY LUBE ALL CARTRIDGES BEFORE SIZING EVEN IF I HAVE A CARBIDE SIZER AS IT REDUCES THE SIZING EFFORT IMMENSELY. SO FOR ME LOADING .44-40s IS THE SAME AS .44 MAGNUMs. STARLINE .44-40 BRASS IS TOUGH AND I DO NOT LOSE CASES AS I HAVE IN THE PAST WITH WINCHESTER AND REMINGTON .44-40s.

I just wish that .38-40 brass [even Starline's]was a little more robust. I will throw the .38 Super out as another great old round to shoot.

Yep, I'm in love with the 32-20 as well. It introduced me to bottleneck cartridges a long time ago down in Texas. I find it very versatile. And the 32H&Rmag and 327FedMag has brought back to life a caliber I thought was dead and gone, the .32's.
I've wandered into the 44 and 45 Colt camp for a cup of coffee or two, but it's the gun and not so much the caliber that also keeps me warm and fuzzy. The 357mag will always hold a special spot in my heart. The Max couldn't get any sweeter.
But we're talking about low recoil.
The winning ticket I get to punch is the Colt Diamondback in 38 special and 22. I don't think I have anything in the vault that quite fits my hand and my eye. The balance, weight, size are all damn near perfect for me. The finish looks like liquid blue glass. The fit on all of mine are nothing short of outstanding. I'm a Colt snake fan. The Python is in a class by itself, but the Diamondbacks just keep putting out when their big sister has gone home. I'm not the biggest 38 special fan, but those Diamondbacks keep me shooting thousands with a huge grin on my face.
Reloading of course has kept my big boomers satisfied and busy. We can all make a caliber do just about what we want without playing dragon slayer.

Both 38-40 and 44-40 Starline Brass holds up just fine. The trick is use the Lee Crimp Die instead of roll crimping.
I just spent the day working up stout 38-40 loads for my TC Contender. Loaded some cases 10+ times. Never lost a one...
