I'll start. I kind of like the .38 Special, a 148gr WC, 2-1/2grs bullseye. Great small game fun load. also the .45 Colt 250gr SWC 6gr Titegroup, great everything load. More power,,, .44 Special & a healthy dose of 2400. Anyone else like the more sedate ctgs.? Lots of talk about .454, .480, .460 etc. Some must like the milder ctgs?

Glad you brought the subject up. I'm gettin' on up in years now and sort of laying aside the fire-breathin' stuff. Don't get me wrong, still like to run some good .44 Magnums once in awhile. But about a year ago, I was ready to take some brass to the scrap dealer, when I got brilliant idea! Some of the .45 Colt brass was suffering only from neck splits, so...... I trimmed 55 cases to .45 ACP length. These would chamber and fire in my Ruger Blackhawk with the .45 ACP cylinder in place, and would work with the .45 Colt cylinder also. And, loading was accomplished using ACP dies and .45 Colt shell holder. I called this the .45 Xtra Short, though there is a similar, if not identical, round called the .45 Cowboy Special, also idnetical to the .45-06 of many moons ago. VOILA!The original .45/06 utilized a 234 gr. full jacketed bullet, but I've settled on a 200 gr. RNFP lead, but may try, just for kicks the 230 gr. FMJ ACP bullet. Recoil is a puff in the hand, accuracy is good, and it will completely penetrate the target paper at ten yards. Bob Wright

I just recently sold this gun off, a Uberti/Cimarron Open Top Navy in .38 Special. (Not really a historically accurate gun, but a whale of a lot of fun.) I had a very mild .38 Special load based on a 158 gr. RNFP and the thing was really fun to shoot. Sights were worthless, to me, but the gun had such natural pointing characteristics a shooter just couldn't help hitting what he aimed at. It was best just to ignore the sights, point, and squeeze 'em off. Bob Wright

SHOOT A LOT OF .38 SPECIALS AND LEVERGUNS IN .38 SPECIAL,.357 MAGNUM, .45 COLT, AND .44 SPECIAL. JUST FINISHED UP THE NEW TAURUS .357 RAGING HUNTER FOR DEC."GUNS" COVER FEATURE. MOST ACCURATE AND PLEASANT SHOOTING .357 I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. SIX-SHOTS GROUPS AT 25 YARDS WITH FACTORY AND HANDLOADS; CAST AND JACKETED, 125 TO 200 GRAIN BULLETS, ALL AVERAGED UNDER ONE-INCH.

Thanks fellows, I almost knew there were some like me who enjoy the milder loads. A great day spent with a nice S&W M&P & the .38 special load I mentioned is huge fun!!! I've had tons of fun with a nice Colt SAA .44 WCF too! A fun load!

I love shooting light .38 special loads, light .44 special loads, and .45 Colt cowboy loads in my single actions. Even more, I enjoy the low recoil and low noise .22 revolvers.

While I have quite an array of 44spec loads on hand here, the Bulldog and the SSS(shiny polished S.S.) NM Vaq Sheriff see the most of and like my "Frog Smackin Loads". The Penn DEWC and 7grs of Unique. The most instock 480 load here uses Missourri's PC'd 340gr bullet on 8grs of TB, a 44spec kinda loading with another 100grs of bullet.

After surgeries on both hands due to other issues, the .38 Special and .22lr are my standards now. I used to be heavy into the .32's but have settled on the .38/357 as my do all now and there's enough load data and different bullets to play at loading for the rest of my life. It's all about fun as I don't hunt any longer so why abuse myself just to punch paper and rocks.

I tend to shoot a lot of .32 H&R's of late. When I do carry a big bore, it's loaded down to 850fps or so.

One of my favorites, to shoot, not necessarily reload, is the .38 S&W. I also like the .38 S&W Special. The .32 S&W long as well. I have Smith & Wessons Double actions in all the aforementioned. One that I particularly like is my N frame .44-40. A cast 220 over 13.0 grains of Bluedot would pile all the shots into a tiny little group. Even though it isn't exactly a sedate load, it feels like it in the big N frame.
I've always been a .32 H&R fan and recently picked up another Single Six so chambered.
But, it's hard to beat a Single Six in .22 LR for loads of fun.

I only shoot the hot stuff for hunting and practice for that. The rest of the time I rarely shoot anything over a thousand feet per second. Now some of the bullets are pretty big but they are slow.

The .38-40 is an old favorite. Most of the time, I load it mild using Green Dot. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

God Bless all of you! I have found my new HOME. Haha. This single actions site is the best EVER! Lee and Frank V , i couldnt agree more, some of these old rounds are just a blast to shoot. Hell i love 45 Schofield! Couple of years ago i was talking to some cowboy action shooters from OK. at the Track in Dinwiddie VA, (Hope i spelled that right)and they were all about the 38/40. Boredom got the best of me the following weekend and i whooped up a junk parts BH, and threw whatever i had at it. LOL. 10 inch Silhouette site, vaquero trigger, Bisley Hammer, Dragoon Gripper off of a 74 Super Blackie that i had turned into a 44 Ronnie Stupid with a Wells # 9 In Brass. Brownells hooked me up with the reamer and i all ready had some barrell blank from douglas! And away i went. I was flabbergasted at the accuracy that 7.6 of Unique put on those 180 leads and it didnt matter from what distance, they played follow the leader. Even with all the monsters and Brick launchers i have enjoyed making , this one is Becoming a favorite shooter Real fast and fixing to have siblings. Just a waiting on donor frames!

Almost all my original threads are about the oldies.
25-20, 32-20, 38-40, 44 Special, 44-40 and 45 Colt.
I love to build these in modern, adjustable sight guns.
