Grips are checkered buffalo horn... I got super lucky... and found them on a table for sale at the MN state SASS Nationals... 5 to 6 year's ago... super lucky, as I had just put that Single Six Bird's head grip frame on this gun, & had it on me that day to check for fit... the plastic grips I bought originally fit horribly... and these buffalo grips fit like they were custom made for my gun... the seller did not know who made them

I must be from the other side of the planet, cause I can't possibly carry the weight you guys are talking about. It seems you guys are talking about beautiful, fun guns. My carry is not for fun, it's for SHTF.
I walk a lot out in the desert and mountain backcountry of Arizona. I carry a scandium S&W MP360 PD 357mag that weighs 13.3 oz. I absolutely luv this gun. I forget I'm wearing it. No more hitching up your pants all day.
The downside is the recoil. Even with new, full rubber grips, it's worse than my 44magnums. I carry it a lot, but shoot it very little. However, in an encounter where two shots were taken, I didn't feel the recoil until 10 minutes later when I looked at my black and blue palm.
I've got lots of beautiful shooters, but none that I could carry all day. I'm too old, too light in the butt, and too spoiled. The Perfect Packin Pistol is 13oz.

Prescut, maybe what we both need are horses. That way, we can carry two beautiful sixguns on the waist and a lever action in the scabbard, and it'll be the horse's burden. I kind of gave up on horses though, after I had to jump off a recalcitrant one in the Colorado mountains years ago.

Been mulling over a drift rear nm single six frame converted to 10mm like huey's trail gun from reeder with a 3.75" barrel and an om xr3 aluminum frame. Should be pretty light while keeping a good punch to it.

Should be pretty light while keeping a good punch to it. I'm working on an octagon barrel 357 Mag on an O.M. frame now. Will retain the aluminum grip frame and ERH for a lightweight packing gun. Your described project sounds great. Look forward to hearing more.

Pecos Pete,
I think you have the solution and it fits my childhood dreams from Texas. And if someone wants to say Packing Pistol, a mule is the way to go. Horses not only carry your load, but they are great companions in the backcountry.

My 396ng comes in around 25oz unloaded. Can go a few ounces lower swapping in a titanium cylinder from the mountain lite but the recoil goes from noticible to unpleasant with the Buffalo bore 200gr Barnes xpb 44 special load. It definantly reached the diminishing returns threshold and got the steel cylinder back.
On the flyweight 357's when the 340pd first came out I had to have one. With 38s it was snappy but not bad. Dropped in a cylinder of 140gr Silvertips and was physically ill by the end of the cylinder. Drove home and watched my hand turn black and blue while swelling up like a catchers mitt. Xrays later that night showed two hairline fractures. To light is as bad or worse than to heavy.

I hear you MedicDave.
My 360 recoil is as brutal as you describe. Really sorry to hear about the hairline fractures. The 360 is the only gun I have that I don't let anyone shoot, but me. It sounds like you know why. I don't think I've had quite that bad of a time, but I don't know the silvertips.
In practice I always use a Walmart weight lifters' gloves and Jerry Miculeck's death grip. That seems to help a lot. I replaced the S&W rubber grips that were flat out STUPID. They did not cover the metal backstrap. It was much more controllable with full wrap around rubber. I absolutely hate rubber grips, but this was a no choice kind of question.
I snuck up on my scandium using 38s. I then went to low level 357s and then mediums. I still shoot a fair amount of 44 magnums and 357 Maximums, but those hawglegs have weight. The scandium at 13 oz just doesn't soak up much of the recoil at all. I think my experience with handling recoil helped a lot.
Believe me when I say I would rather be able to carry more weight and rid myself of the 360. But at 68, I just don't think that's going to happen. So rather than give up my security blanket, I pack that little beast.
Prescut and a PERFECT packin pistol, should be gorgeous. my dull grey 360 with rubber is ugly as sin.

hey patdaddy, I luv the 44 special. I might even be able to tote that 18oz around. A really nice combo for its intended purpose. Now remember I wrote that mine was ugly as sin. I mean no offense. But if you were trying to out ugly me; You won. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) There are 3 pages of posts on SW forum about the 296 and its looks. That Centennial hump is just too much ugly for me to carry. That 44 special caliber just might change my mind. Prescott

Pretty is as pretty does. And my 29 oz Charter .44 special with rubber grips is the prettiest gal at the ball WHEN I NEED HER. Add 5 rounds of 200 to 240 gr bullets and her weight goes up a touch.

Funny, my 44spec Bulldog is my most carried piece. In my fleece vest pocket now as usual. For in house or urban carry it has Matt's 250 gr HP and when it has to, for bigger critters, it gets 268gr copper-washed bullets LFN in shape. I don't try for velo and 6grs of Unique will do . Been playing with PP and Longshot but the Bulldogs speedloaders and ammo strips still full of the older loads.
