Hey y'all first post here. Has anyone here built a shorty sheriff style lightweight blackhawk? I picked up a Talo SBH earlier this year thinking it would be perfect but it's a little heavier than I'm wanting. I would love to have one like this www.sixguns.com/BookOfThe44/bot44c20_files/image024.jpg but I can't find much info on the shorties.

I have not, but I am going to pour a glass of wine, toss a log or two on the fire and sit back to enjoy the pictures of and stories about custom lightweight packin pistols built by or for folks here.

Those guns were built by Bob Baer I believe and he does great work but not for resale if not mistaken. Andy Horvath does what is called his L’il Gun conversion and he can do the short barrel etc as can many other guys but Andy is kind of known for those.

The concept of the "lightweight packin pistol" has evolved in my moldy old head over the last 5 years. I was a long time advocate of the idea that a man could carry a moderate size steel pistol in a well designed belt and holster package all day no problem... Flash forward to retirement in 2012 and a new gig as a Range Safety Officer on a 12 lane indoor range with 9.5 hour days and 24,000-25,000 shooter a year. My "lightweight packin pistol" is a Glock 43 in a Crossbreed Minituck IWB holster.

I hear ya Axehandle; mine's a Kahr CW9 on most days and a CM9 in a pants pocket in the summer.

You might take a look at some of the 3.5" & 4" barrel Uberti offerings. They have standard grip frames along with birds head & Thunderer style. The sights aren't as prominent as Blackhawk sights, but they are nice handguns. For the price of a Blackhawk custom, you might also consider a Freedom Arms Model 97.

I have a Reeder Backpacker in 45 Colt. It’s a fine minimum weight Blackhawk but it’s still a Blackhawk. I carry a Kimber Micro 9 in my pocket.

FWIW I have a Simply Rugged Chesty Puller harness and a Simply Rugged Cuda for a G40 I plan to experiment with this winter. G40 isn't a "lightweight packin pistol" in my book but... High hopes here. Worked well with a 44 Special GP100.

Smokingun.... Have you considered a New vaquero? Fixed sights of course,, but With a sherrifs model, they should serve you well. The Vaquero is lighter than a Blackhawk. Or even pick up a birdshead 3-3/4" barrel. If you do not like the birdshead grip that can be changed also, maybe even to a alloy frame, to make it lighter

Smokingun pay close attention, there are ENABLERS among your thread. They speak of grip changes, barrel changes, sight changes. They type eloquently as they pry you away from your checkbook.

If you do not like the birdshead grip that can be changed also, maybe even to a alloy frame, to make it lighter I have thought about one but would rather have the adjustable sights but it's still an option and I wasn't sure if the aluminum grip would fit the new xr3 frame. I have an OM .45 birdshead but would never change the grip frame because I enjoy shooting it like it is.
