that's true, the barrel on my Smith .44spl gets pretty thin at the muzzle. the problem with that (according to bushog in a recent thread) is you can't put an ejector rod screw in a barrel that thin. I guess you could go without an ejector rod and just use the base pin to eject the cases though.
I don't know if you can weld a barrel without damaging it but it might be possible to weld a small block of steel onto the barrel were the ejector rod housing screw would go. this should give the thickness needed for the ERH screw. the only downside here would be a gap between the barrel and the ERH running the length of the barrel.

If you go with a really thin barrel leave the ERH off. The loads won’t be real hot and you could notch your chambers to flip the empties out. Six 240-250 bullets at 900 fps should take care of most issues you will encounter.

I think if I need something lighter than the little 41 Special in my avatar, I’ll just wear lighter boots or go commando and skip the undies to make up the weight difference. Shoot if I just took one truck key instead if the whole keyring and left the loose change in the truck I’d save the weight we are talking about and still have a gun rather than a a ghost gun😊

now don't go trying to simplify things Curtis.
I actually forgot you could notch the chambers to get the cases out. that would definitely make things easier.

All this weighing got me curious so I went and weighed a few on my wife's digital scales. No idea of their level of accuracy but here it is.
From lowest to highest
First, an OM Single Six 22LR Lightweight, the steel cylinder, all blued model - 4-5/8" barrel, factory plastic cheese graters 27.65 ounces Next up, a NM 32 H&R Mag, birdshead with factory black micarta(?), barrel cut to 3-1/2" by Alan, BP chamfer and Bisley hammer by me, 32.80 ounces Third is an OM Single Six Harton conversion t0 41 Special, 4-1/2" barrel, Desert Big Horn -Caudill - grips 34.40 ounces. I think this is the one Bushog mentioned above as his lightest creation. Next, oddly enough, is a Gallagher built 500 Linebaugh, 4" barrel, birdshead with walnut, scalloped frame 35.25 ounces Big holes in that one. Then, a Bowen built NM Single Six in 327 Fed Mag, 4" barrel, horn grips, S&W K-22 barrel 35.45 ounces Next, a Harton built OM 45, big frame, non-fluted cylinder, cut to 4-5/8", walnut grips 36.75 ounces Should be an aluminum GF and probably ERH. And the only Colt, a SAA from 1907, massaged by Bowen, 45 Colt, 4-1/2" barrel, old ivory grips 36.80 ounces. This one just feels right. And a NM 45 Colt, big frame factory birdshead, BP chamfered, 3-3/4" barrel, factory black micarta (?) grips 39.00 ounces. This rides in the back pocket of my jeans whenever I'm out and about on my place. Then comes a Bowen built, NM mid-frame Flat Top in 50 GI, 5 shot, 4-1/2" barrel with factory cheese graters 41.25 ounces. Once again, big holes. Now the only TLA, a #5, 5-1/2" barrel with ivory grips 44.85 ounces Next a Gallagher Forkin built large frame Vaquero in 45, with S&W sights and a 5-1/2" octagon barrel with horn grips 46.25 ounces Following that, a Linebaugh built 500L, 5-1/2" barrel with White Micarta grips 48.20 ounces And finally, rounding out the baker's dozen, a Huntington built 500 Linebaugh Maximum, 6-1/2" banded barrel, ivory grips 51.35 ounces, every one of which is greatly appreciated when you light this puppy up.
The heaviest is almost twice as heavy as the lightest. I was surprised by how light the large frame, birdshead 500L was - it is a fun one. Tim

I encourage all of you youngsters to think ahead to the day when those smaller fixed sights get harder to see.
I have a couple of fixed sight revolvers that I now wish had adjustable sights. I much prefer the look and lines of a fixed sight revolver, but when it comes to hitting something, I need the bigger adjustable sights.

Next, oddly enough, is a Gallagher built 500 Linebaugh, 4" barrel, birdshead with walnut, scalloped frame 35.25 ounces Thanks for taking the time to weigh all of those. Y'all have about convinced me I need a 500. How is the recoil on them compared to a 44? Especially one that is 35oz

FWIW, my Ruger Birdshead in 45 with no ERH but with an Aluminum frame and Powers Bisley hammer is definitely 33.2 oz. It is 38.9 oz with the ERH and birdshead frame: an extra 5.7 oz.

What ever Tim (princeout) says about recoil, don’t believe him. He’s a recoil junkie. He will use words like vigorous, brisk, lively and snappy. He may not even mention his shoulder surgery...

I’d rather shoot my 4” 500L with 450-465gr Bullets at 1000-1100fps than my 3.75” 45colt with 340gr at 1200fps. Maybe it’s the pressures or powders used but the two definitely recoil differently. The 45 colt is sharper!!!

Hey y'all first post here. Has anyone here built a shorty sheriff style lightweight blackhawk? I picked up a Talo SBH earlier this year thinking it would be perfect but it's a little heavier than I'm wanting. I would love to have one like this www.sixguns.com/BookOfThe44/bot44c20_files/image024.jpg but I can't find much info on the shorties. For a first time poster you might have actually hit a home run. You have a PM Sir!

I carry my Talo SBH in front or back pocket of my Carhart bibs. Weigh your holster rig and see how much it cuts out for weight.
