All this weighing of sixguns got me thinking of a Clements gun I had David build several years back. I don't remember ever weighing it but had in mind a lightweight carry gun when I designed it. Out of the safe and on the scale....33.5oz. Not bad, and a 255GR hard cast at 1000fps in a 45 auto rim should settle all issues that come along. Dennis. This one wins the prize I think.......

This one wins the prize I think....... Yes, and a very effective way to deal with the aesthetic issue of blackened aluminum not matching blued steel. I now know what my next revolver will look like.

Back on page 3 there was some speculation about the weight of a flattop convertible in 45 Colt/ACP. Excuse my lousy pic, morning light and all. I like the size of this gun, but it's heavier than I remember my 4 5/8" 45 Blackhawk. The aluminum grip frame and ERH must make more difference than I thought. I especially like the grips, they are noticeably thinner than most Ruger grips. I kind like the faux ivory look too.

For the couple of late-model Blackhawks I own, the weights listed in the specs have been spot on compared to what I measured, and I assumed this was the norm. That puts the convertible in a different light for me. I was considering getting it over a Bisley medium frame because of the weight, even though I prefer the Bisley grip. I do like the combination of stainless and ivory, faux or otherwise. That is one handsome gun you have there.

Warhawk, I had to reach down and check my holster. For a second there second there I thought you had my gun, but it appears they made more than one. Thanks for the info and the great pictures.

The Ruger steel grip frames are very heavy compared to similar Colt or Colt clone. For simplicity, they used the same molds as for the aluminum grip frames. The aluminum grip frames have extensive webbing for strength. The steel grip frames have the same webbing. It is simple to remove most of the webbing with a hand drill and files.

Jayhawker? from Kansas? I never thought about trimming out the excess weight under the grips. My brother is a machinist, maybe I should turn him loose on it. Steve, How's the action on yours? Mine could stand a tune up and a few sharp edges smoothed up. But it's tight and I don't see anything "wrong" with it, just needs a little attention. I guess I'm spoiled, all my other Ruger single actions are old models. I'm trying to decide between a Super Blackhawk hammer, and a Power half cock hammer (Bisley or SBH style).

I did a "John Taffin" poor mans trigger job on mine and with that one leg off the trigger return spring it is light and breaks pretty clean. Like you said, the action locks up fairly tight and I have no problem with the accuracy. WW Silvertips will make single ragged hole, all six shots at 25 yards. I always have great luck with 45 colt accuracy with WW Silvertips. I also get 1 1/2 groups using Black Hills cowboy loads at 25 yards. I tried several recipes using 300 grain WFN hardcast from Beartooth but they just do not seem to fly right. Best I can get is 3 inches. I have some 265 grain Keith's on the way from Beartooth that I hope will make accurate everyday packin utility loads. I also have a set of rams horns on the way soon from Zane. As much as I like the factory "ivory" I am really looking forward to the new grips. Keep me posted on the hammer change. I think that a hammer change is a strong possibility for me as well.

Steve, I plan to shoot more 45 ACP in this one than 45 Colt. 10-12 years ago I consolidated calibers and went with the 44. i May have some 45 Colt brass and a few bullets, but not much. I do however have a lot of 45 ACP ammo, and only an M&P 45 to shoot it in.

It is about time you found a real sidearm to launch your 45 ACP instead of tossing rounds down range with Tupperware. Let me know how the 45 ACP works for you. My 45 ACP cylinder is still sit-in on the shelf in the gun safe. I will likely give it a try one of these days.

Here's another data point in the quest for the perfect packing pistol, a 4-5/8" Ruger Blackhawk Bisley Flattop in 44 Special. However, at 44 ounces (measured), it's probably not a serious contender in the category. I'll most likely continue to carry my Bulldog when traveling any appreciable distance on foot and save the flattop for those times when I'm wearing a proper gun belt.
