Dick, I gave serious thought to paying them a visit prior to everything being finally settled. I've got relatives in Missoula, and almost left less than an hour into the first night due to a miscommunication with the owner and his sons who were running the hunts and the accommodations. Back then I travelled with my Rhodesian Ridgeback, (bigbrowndog) everywhere and had cleared him to be in the lodge with me, however the sons had failed to notify the owner of this. So when I walked in with Scout, he immediately got defensive about bringing a dog into his lodge without checking with him first. Not one to back down I told him I had no intention of doing so and had cleared the situation with the person I spoke to on the phone, he asked for a name and I gave him his sons name. He immediately called, and was thoroughly pissed at his son but apologized to me, we never saw him again for the rest of the hunt. I should have taken that as a omen of things to come and just continued driving west to Missoula, and spent time with relatives.

Good morning - I have shot a half dozen or so. I shoot the young cows, excellent eating. If you want a hide I would recommend going as late as possible, the fur doesn't get thick until it gets cold. Dick - I would reccommend Juniper Mountain Ranch, they were running around 3,000 - 3,500 for young animals. I don't know if that is on the cheaper side or not . They are a class act , with a great meat cutter in town. Since this a harvest hunt shoot it on friday, driving away with frozen meat including sausage Sunday morning. One of the cleanest outfits I have worked with. After the hunt they will drive you around and let you see 400 class elk. Bronc

I was so spoiled... we paid $900.00 each for our 1st 2 & $1,000.00 for our 3rd & biggest... they would gut it & skin it for $50.00 & then we had to take it to a local locker plant... we got 100% of the meat, & kept the heart out each time they were gutted... buffalo heart sliced up in 3/4" steaks & put in a bag of Italian dressing in the fridge over night & grilled the next day, were awesome

most ranches around here offer meat cows or young bulls for $1500 to $2500. i'd love to take one someday, either with a handgun or a Sharps style rifle. this place even has white Bison. www.bigironranchadventures.com/

I shot two of them for free, but I only got one steak out of it. A friends uncle had 5 that they were going to butcher and they asked me if I wanted to shoot one. Of course I said yes. This was when I was young and stupid as opposed to now just being stupid. I didn't have anything bigger than a 7mm mag so that is what I took. It didn't go through the skull at 8 feet. Shortly after that I bought a 45-70. Haven't had the chance to shoot anymore of them.

I've hunted twice with Lee Hawes out of Ford, Kansas. I understand he has the buffalo on a new place as the previous location dried up and the grass failed. He stopped hunting for a few years because he didn't want to resort to feeding them like cattle.
At the old ranch you lived in a tipi or dug-out, ate out of a dutch oven, rode out on horseback and kinda relived the old times ways for a bit. We had a blast and filled the freezer twice with great meat. The processor he used was South Fork Processing in Ness City, Kansas.
Lee is a walking encyclopedia of western history. I'd go back in an instant!

I took my old bull a number of years ago and at the time I sponsered (through Christian Childrens Fund) a Souix girl from the Devils Lake Tribe of North Dakota. Long story short the agent got in touch with her uncles who had a home built trailer with cooler who made the trip and picked up almost all of the meat...Everybody was happy.... The photos show the shoulder mount while the other shows the moment of impact from a 300 gr. Partition from my 454. You can see his back legs going out from under him...................... The actual skull is mounted on the far wall while the horns on the shoulder mount are reproductions......

Nice job James, you're kind of nasty with that 454! I think I see blood starting to come out of his nose as he's going down, you rocked him pretty hard. Tell me it was a cast bullet!

I love grass fed buffalo, but by the time it reaches the grocery store in Newberg, Oregon it's so expensive I just can't justify the extra $$ to buy it!
