Traveling about 15 hours to take a bison. Place will butcher and vac PAC the meat. I'm looking for a meat animal mainly but still would like the option of a head mount. Should I be looking for a big cow or a small bull? Really don't have the space for a big bull! Also will 3 150qt coolers get the job done? Thanks

the ranch will dictate what animals are available, remember, the younger the more tender the meat will be.your 3 coolers should be enough if you dont want a lot of bone,on the trip home i would stop somewhere dry ice is sold and place about ten lbs on top of each cooler on top of news paper and seal with duck tape, should arrive home in fresh, semi frozen condition.

Thanks Edward, do you think a young bull will look good on the wall? Or cow for that matter?

I've shot 2... one smaller & young, & one a much bigger bull... I didn't end up doing any mounts, but saved both hides, since they were prime... had them in a freezer for years, & never could dig up the money to have them tanned, so I salted & dried them... been hanging on a shed wall for several years... don't know if they can still be tanned or not... both my skulls I just dried & bleached & they are lawn ornaments...
likely you'll be shooting a young bull... unless the place has too many & they are trying to thin the herd... we shot them for 3 years in a row, & only shot bulls

beauty is in the eye of the beholder but i think any bison bull will look great in shoulder mount style or European style.

JFS, what caliber is that FA? very nice! Thank you....That`s my old faithful 454....if you look close at the black micarta grip you can see a chip at the base which broke off when I was exiting a Land Rover in Africa.... Never get that fixed or replaced...too much character... that handgun has taken its share of game...from blesbok in Africa to brown bear in Alaska and all points in between....

OK guys fess up, where's the cheapest place to shoot a meat animal. I know the price's have went up in the last few years. I love buffalo but when I order it in a restaurant I have to blink twice at the price.

Choose carefully, very carefully!!!!........I shot one at a place in Montana called "Diving Buffalo Ranch". They run a bison meat processing plant I was told my carcass would yield approx. 50% meat, the carcass weighed 1300 pounds and when I got my phone call from the meat processor I was told I had 180 pounds of meat coming to me!?!?!? Needless to say I was quite taken aback, then they were unwilling to fulfill the original agreement of getting the meat to town so It could be shipped to me. I had requested steaks, filets, and the rest ground up into chili meat and dried sausage,.......in the end all I got was dried sausage, a whopping forty eight pounds of it. It was delicious but definitely not worth the trouble. The hunt started off badly and when everything was settled four years later, and hide and head finally showed up I was surprised to find that while the hide was certainly mine,....the head was not!!!! A fitting end to an unforgettable hunt, for the wrong reasons!!!!..............choose carefully.

Its on my list too, love the meat and would like a skull mount. Don't know what I would do with the big ol hide though, no walls big enough for one! Be great for the cabin floor but I don't have a cabin floor. The Lions club in Idaho offers a buff hunt raffle every year, and been buying raffle tickets for at least 10 years and still haven't scored. One of these days... but right now have another Africa trip coming up in a couple weeks.

Trapr, that is a terrible rip off! I'm afraid I'd be in jail somewhere in Montana if I got 180 lbs of meat from a 1300 lb animal. A friend of my shot one just west of Dillon a few years ago with my Ruger 480 & he had a lot of meat & it was really good. Had the hide tanned at Twin Falls, Idaho & it turned out great, had it on one of his guest beds.
