So I was just flipping through a couple loading manuals I have. An older Hornady manual has a section on the "45 Long Colt". No Ruger Only data. The Speer 11th (1987) has Ruger Only/Contender data and specifically talks about people wrongly referring to the 45 Colt as 45 Long Colt. So, it seems that even Hornady and Speer can't agree! I'll stick with 45 Colt

There was/is the .45 Colt, and for a brief period there was a .45 Short Colt, but there never has been a .45 "long" Colt; that cartridge was named the .454 Casull.

Someone needs to tell Hornady there is no such thing as the 45 Long Colt I thought the early name for the 454 Casull was the 45 Magnum. Kind of like the 500 Linebaugh was called the 500 Magnum. Which is how mine is marked. Anyway, I just thought it interesting to run across this... Third Edition 1980 I mistyped in my first post. It's the 47th Lyman (1992) that makes it a point that 45 Long Colt is not the correct name. Not the Speer manual. But the Speer does have the Ruger Only/Contender data. Kind of funny really.

Dang 44 doesn't even make a good 43... Guess we should praise Gary Reeder for his 429 GNR....

Yikes! We can't do that. My 5 shot Reeder 45 Colt says "45 Long Colt" on the side plate... One step forward, two steps back!

I find it amusing when folks get into discussions on terminology. And it's not confined to firearms. But, sometimes,,, proper terminology is necessary when describing something,, especially when looking for parts, or selling something. Other times,,, it matters very little except to the folks who feel it's a pet peeve to not get it correct. I will admit to having a few terminology pet peeves,,, but it comes from being a firearms instructor, and wanting to make sure my students get the correct info,,, and when they are long gone from my class, they can recall I taught them correctly,, by not using slang terms. I hope they can recall I was an educated instructor & gave them the best I could. But,,, I also know we will never wipe out the mis-used terms that are deeply entrenched into our language. And,, when we see things in print, or on TV or movies,,, that use the incorrect technical terminology,,, well, how can we expect the average person to NOT be confused. Just looking at the pics above proves that some terms will always be with us, due to the fact of being printed & mistakenly used.
Gotta love how language & words are screwed around with!

Wow, I really didn't intend to "open old wounds" so to speak. For whatever reason Hornady called it the 45 Long Colt in this manual. Does anyone have any other manuals that refer to the Long Colt? How about a newer Hornady manual. More of a curiosity really. I'm not trying to make a case for the Long Colt nomenclature.

My 8th ed Hornady from 2010 says .45 Colt and in the text states that Long Colt was never correct but still hangs on for whatever reason.

Maybe we should create a stretched .45 Colt cartridge, so the name could be legitimately applied to a cartridge with dimensions longer than the .45 Colt...
We can cite countless published examples of the erroneous term being used, but what point are we intending to make by doing so? If we cite enough examples of the misnomer being used, are we at some point expected to concede to the ignorant misuse and officially rename the .45 Colt?
