Maybe we should create a stretched .45 Colt cartridge, so the name could be legitimately applied to a cartridge with dimensions longer than the .45 Colt... We can cite countless published examples of the erroneous term being used, but what point are we intending to make by doing so? If we cite enough examples of the misnomer being used, are we at some point expected to concede to the ignorant misuse and officially rename the .45 Colt? Sheesh...take it easy. This is not meant to be an argument or a "who's right who's wrong". Just an observation in an old manual. I guess the point is.... Gee, that's wierd... I for one don't see "countless published examples". Maybe in the age of the internet and in casual conversations or an article in a rag. But it seems unusual to see it actually officially published in a loading manual. Have you seen it in any other loading manual? Or even published online load data by powder or bullet manufacturers? I haven't. That's why this is weird.

Sheesh...take it easy. This is not meant to be an argument or a "who's right who's wrong". You seem to be reading a degree of emotion into my posts which isn't there on my end. Not wound up about this ridiculousness in the least, and not arguing right from wrong, because there's nothing to argue. Right is right and wrong is wrong...and perpetuating wrong, no matter how persistently, still doesn't make it right in the end. It is what it is, and a person may not be able to change it, but that doesn't mean she/he has to acquiesce. I admittedly do find it annoying, but only in the same sense that I find most senseless perpetuation of ignorance annoying...flat earth believers, science deniers, pizza-gate conspiracy theorists, perpetuators of the .45 "long" Colt label...all same, same. That said, the trend toward using the fallacious "long" Colt label does seem to be accelerating (Hodgen now makes reference to it on their loading page; all manner of ammo manufacturers are using it; retailers are using it, even when the product manufacturer doesn't...), and the psychology of what might be driving this accelerating trend is curious, or "interesting" if you like. My theory would be the propensity to embrace labels which sound impressive: "Max, "Super", "Long", "Magnum", "Turbo".... Bigger and badder is better sounding to some people, and ".45 Long Colt" sounds more impressive than plain old .45 Colt. It's stupid, and it's incorrect, but I think it's here to stay and I think it's only going to get worse.

Hey, it started as the 45 Colt back in 1873. Then somebody named Major Schofield (sp) came along and wanted a S&W in an abbreviated cartridge.... specifically a 230 gr. bullet with 28 gr. of black powder in 45. That served the army for a while. Then a cartridge manufacturer around the early 1900's (Remington UMC I think) made the same load in a short 45 Colt case ( and marked as 45 Short Colt... box was labeled the same). A guy goes into the mercantile and asks for 45's. Which ones the clerk asks!!!!!!! You should get the drift here.... or not.

I've heard it said that some fight for rights and some fight for right. Both terms been around longer than we have.

Some people say OBUMMER was a good president and that sure is a stretch of the English language. To me the term 45 colt has always meant the .45 acp and its related pistols.I use Long Colt for my other 45's. May not be proper to some but they are mine and I can call them what I want.

May as well refer to dogs as cats, as long as we're at it, eh?

You certainly can and most if not all knowledgeable shooters will know what you are talking about, but its still incorrect usage.

There are two 45 Colts... one is a single action and the other a semi-auto. The semi-auto reins for most of the world as the 45 Colt 1911 in naming conventions. Argue all you want, people will just ignore you.

...and then there's Colt 45. Is it beer or a gun? Or beer with a kick!
