Sometimes humor is hard to spot in a post, that's why a smiley or LOL is helpful... Paul's post lacked either of those.

So now that we've got that settled..... Is it the "500 Magnum" or the "500 Linebaugh"? Clearly a .500 Linebaugh!

Is it the "500 Magnum" or the "500 Linebaugh"? What did the inventor of the cartridge name it?

I've always thought that the long colt thing started after the 45 ACP arrived on the scene, somewhere someone ordered a batch of ammo and got the 45 Colt Auto round and not the 45 colt revolver cartridge and it stuck. Think about it back then it took weeks to get things from back east so you would want to make damn sure you got it right the first time. Seems like a good way to make sure to me.
Anyone know when the term first appeared in print? I'm 50 and have heard the term used since I first started reading about guns as a kid about 8 if I remember correctly, all my friends had comics and I had gun magazines, though not many.
The usage doesn't bother me in the least neither does people calling magazines clips, but that's different forum. LOL

Should it not be the former .454 fat Colt but now .452 skinny Colt?

I believe Mr Keith called it the long Colt with a small L. The Rem-Umc Schofield length cases with the Colt sized rim was head stamped 45-Colt. People said give me a box of the long .45 Colt cartridges.

Keith lived in a time when the factories still loaded the .45Gov't, which was a hybrid cartridge loaded for the military. Narrow .45Colt rim at .45S&W length for use in both SAA's and S&W's.

As long as people especially on this board shoot booklets out of there 45's it makes it a weak argument to say you should use the correct name. I prefer to shoot self-made bullets out of my 45 long colt
