Did a little chrono work with Missouri's 300 grain hammer in my 44 special Vaquero Got acquainted with my latest acquisition, a BSA conglomeration of some sort. And tried out the new trigger on my 32-20 Stevens project. Was nice to get out and shoot, have not been feeling up to doing anything after work for way too long now. Think I got the upper hand for now.

UncleTom, like to hear some more on your use of the 300gr Hammer bullet in your 44spec.. I put a few together a few weeks back when I noticed as deep seated in 44mag the case volume looked to be very close to what it is in a 44spec when using the cannelure. I'll have to go downstairs for the data. I shelved the idea until we get a chrono here. A PM is ok if you don't want to put out your data. Bula

Bula This experiment started out initially with MBW 300 grain LFN bullets that I had on hand. 12 grains of 2400 in starline brass with federal primers yielded 875 fps. The Missouri hammers leave more room inside the case, and I was looking for a little more velocity, tried 13 grains of 2400 under the coated hammers and velocity was 925 fps out of the 3 3/4 barrel. Cases fell out, but this is a far as I felt I needed to take it. This particular gun is set up with tight chambers and a .002 gap and routinely chronographs the same or a little faster than my 4 5/8 guns with a 250/7.5 Unique load. This load with 2400 would probably pick up with the longer barrel I would imagine. Unfortunately, the 300's print too high and I have regulated the front sight for the 250/7.5 unique load, so further development will be in an adjustable sight gun.

I did not shoot for groups, mainly to see if I could reach mid 900's while maintaining normal pressure indicators. I will vary the charge weight by a couple tenths and shoot them on paper across the chrono to get some more data points and report back.

Well, except for the "hot" part ! See I chose 12grs of 2400 WLP and used the cannelure in 44spec too. Tried 13 and went back. The remaining loads here are in 44mag brass and deep seated on 13gr of 2400. I wasn't really planning on shooting these thru a 44spec but to get better extraction of whole cylinders worth outta the M69 44mag 'Smith. I noticed that the forward band on the bullet similar to the difference between spec and mag brass, and so..

Am not really sure if in a 44spec with a short barrel, if there is any advantage to the 300gr bullets over standard weights, nom weights. It may be that when looking for most meplat that Matt's 250gr wadcutter or Penn's 240gr TH or a 255gr WFN are as good as it gets in penetration/terminal performance. The research is fun though. Keeps the cob webs off the loading press ! Someone sent me the SADDEST picture the other day of cob webs on the powder scale. About broke my heart ya know ?

Shot a few cylinders full at some plate racks at about 40 yds in deep snow with my heavy barrel model 10 S&W. This is a police buy back from the French police that Buds Gun Shop had a few months back for $276 I think. The gun shoots great, still deciding on a load before I doing the final "adjusting" to the front sight but it sure shoots nice with 2 different loads. Either a 125 gr "Maxine Mouth" HP or a 156 gr HP, both are powder coated. For sure I'll have to have my son mill just a bit off the right side of the front sight but then it's just a matter of choice, which bullet gets the call. Most likely the 125 HP & a good dose of W231. The 156 gr HP & a nice charge of Longshot really takes the plates down in a hurry although I have to hold right down the right edge of the plates for now, plus a 6 O'clock hold with this heavier bullet. Interesting grips Six! Did it come that way from Bud's or are those something you had laying around?

Hello Stump Buster, good to hear from you! Those grips were on the gun & I go lucky! Forum member Bear Paw Jack told me about them, he has several pair & told me they are collectors items if you can find them. They were made in France & are Trausch grips & when he died his wife just shut the business down. When I first saw them I thought, wow, these are really different but they fit amazing. There's a pair on Ruger Forum for sale for a Ruger SP101 right now that are an ivory type. These like mine, according to BPJ usually bring about $125 if you can find them so I got real lucky.

Looking forward to seeing you, don't come too soon, we've got a LOT of snow. I remember you had some nice toys when you were here last, maybe we could thump on some Ground Squirrels! Yesterday the gun was shooting about 3" left at 40 yds so today my son set it up in his milling machine & after doing some calculations took .012" off the right side of the front sight, bingo! This is with a 150 gr powder coated HP out the window of my truck at 20 yds, 5 shots. Dick
