Something about a 45 ACP sixgun that is wonderfully unscientific.....

Shot the FA 97 41 Mag today with some 220gr Kieth bullets that came with the gun.
The first batch I made up leaded the barrel pretty bad. The original owner had also leaded up the barrel quite badly with the 100 rounds he put through it. These have to be deep seated to fit the 97's cylinder, and I had backed my standard load of 7.3gr hp-38 220gr Rainier Plated down to 6.8 but apparently that was still too fast for these generic bullets.
This time around I used 5.9gr Trail Boss, deep seated 220gr Keith, with virtually no leading. Just a teeny tiny bit by the forcing cone.. Hardly enough to mention. Very easy shooting load an accuracy seemed pretty good. The indoor range was very crowded, so my concentration wasn't the best but groups were still more than acceptable, but not my best ever.
At least now I know I can use the rest of the box of bullets that came with the gun and I'm pretty happy about that.

Also shot a friends Sigma 40 that they could barely hit the paper with. Shot 50 rounds through it, and while the groups weren't as tight as the FA... they were pretty darned good for a Sigma. Diagnosis... it's not the gun that was the issue although I have to say the trigger seemed very inconsistent.
I also participated in a little shoot off with the guys that work at the range. These guys are good shooters, and we do this little contests from time to time ... just for bragging rights.
This challenge was to see who could hit a cut down drinking straw at 7yds in the least amount of shots using the same H&K VP 9. Sraws were cut down to probably about 1 1/2" tall, and stuck on the paperclip that normally hold the paper targets and cranked out. So the piece of straw is standing vertically. I won with a solid hit on the second shot. On any given day, any one of us could come out on top but today was my day !

Was out after the parade and stop in at the picnic trying out some more weight in the packs. Took the 45 Blackhawk along, ran up the road to a pit when we got back to the car, couple cylinders of XTPs with green dot, then ran 325 grain Stoners with #9 through it! Got home and ran some carbons with taillights through an R/D long bow!..

Shot my Huntington-built six-shot .45 Colt Bisley again this morning with 360 grain WFN loads. First target was five shots at 25 yards, and the second was ten shots at 50 yards. I really need to find another Bowen rear sight for this revolver.
