Irregardless of "long Colt" being correct or not, I could care less. But, when folks do speak of the round in that way I know exactly what they're talking about. And I won't make it a point to set them straight on the matter.
On the other hand, when they tell me they're looking to buy a new "clip" for their pistol, I can't remain quiet.

.... Why insert extraneous verbiage to the nomenclature when the original, proper name is completely adequate?.... Because the use of this very common verbiage seems to bother the living crap out of some people and I get a kick out of their discombobulation just like the ones that have to go off for 10 minutes when somebody says clip instead of magazine. These people NEED to come across as big deal experts when in fact - nobody cares! People who know already know and arent bothered by it and those that dont ignore the holier than thou attitude. I think that is hiiiiilarious!

LOL, that's true. Cartridges of the World is a great study.
There have been so many name changes to distinguish loads, gun manufacturers, etc that I doubt anyone could learn it all.
But, the old 45 Colt has so much interesting history of its own. Today you still have to work hard to out perform it regardless what it's called.

I agree. Was recently asked about a custom gun I was having built. I was told it could be marked either way and opted for 45 Colt. But, as clearly shown above the Long Colt moniker was used during the cartridges history. To say that the Colt company who originally introduced this cartridge was wrong is simple denial. Not to beat a dead horse here, but are you referring to the Colt letter shown? That letter is dated 1992, thus of little historical value. Have you ever seen or heard of a Colt firearm marked with LC or Long Colt? I never have, but perhaps someone has. If someone can show here where Colt ever actually used the LC or Long Colt on a firearm, I will change my handle.

Sorry, but the horse truly is dead. Like you, I call it the 45 Colt.
But, as MajorKAP said, I know what cartridge is referred to regardless of what it's called.
I have always enjoyed studying the history of firearms and cartridges.
So, I have no intention of arguing which name is correct or not. I enjoyed the OP's find of brass that was marked "LC." Also, the letter and factory gun so marked.
However, I consider this another lesson and chance to learn something from other forum members. I'm not looking for a soapbox to promote my own opinions.
I really don't care if someone calls it "Colt" or "Long Colt."

...like the ones that have to go off for 10 minutes when somebody says clip instead of magazine. How would anyone confuse "clip" and "magazine"? One's a verb and one's a noun...just like "pop" and "soda". Example: I clip coupons out of the magazine before I go shopping for soda. Give me any lip about it and I'll pop you in the nose. Horses should not be beaten, be they dead or alive. Them what do should find themselves staring down the business end of a .45 Colt. 45 Colt vs. 45 Colt Government: indisputable proof that the government didn't think length mattered.

Yes, we all know what is meant when LC is stated, but whats the harm in searching it out. Look it as a challenge. Someone show me any Colt gun marked LC or Long Colt and I will change my handle. No harm in that is there? Come on, lighen up!

Sounds like at some point in time a clipper got his feelings hurt.

Greg, I can't believe you posted a pic of that asshole Khalid's Colt. Never heard of brass stamped "Tombstone" .....or a Colt .45 stamped "Long". Fact is, most people who use "Long", don't know what the hell a .45Gov't is, let alone that that's what the "Long" was used to differentiate. Most folks think the "Long" is to differentiate the .45Colt from the .45ACP. Which makes no sense either. There is no such cartridge with the given name ".45 Long Colt". Period. It is simply an over-used nickname.

I'm laughing like crazy reading all of this. Craig, I too have no use for Khalid and have been sitting on that picture for about two years I think JUST WAITING for someone ELSE to Re-re-reopen this can of worms. I have probably the least amount of knowledge here for someone with as many posts as I do. I love the 45 Colt cartridge and believe I could learn a LOT from the people that have posted here if I were ever blessed to be able to shoot with any of them. I have about as much respect for corporate Colt as I do for the man the letter was written for. He rides around behind his gun show tables on a Segway. I've not much use for that level of arrogance. I have a lot to learn if I'll keep my mouth shut and my eyes open. All I know for sure is God loves me and all around a pig's ass is ham. Long live the 45 Colt!

Well, to be correct, it's 45 auto when referencing the cartridge; 45 ACP when referring to the 1911A1.

The English language may be messed up, but it ain't dead ! They've been adding words to ole Daniels book since the ink dried the first time. Phrases come in and go out, then come back. Reality intrudes.
