I'll finish the rice loads I started yesterday. Offered to load some in 357 for a friends Python. Called to verify he still wanted them. Was told he got rid of the Python and now has an Anaconda ! Am so glad I called, was not looking forward to loading the smaller cases. Rice loads are tedious enough. I've the wads and all needed for 44's and 480 all set up. Be a pain to set up a cutter and make wads for the smaller hull. So, in 44, size and prime, no special primer. I used 3.5grs of Bullseye this time in 44mag hulls. I use 3grs in 44 spec.. I use the end of a cleaning rod (shotgun) to push the Walters Wad down into the case and onto the Bullseye. Oh, I do not expand/flare for rice loads. I use one of them little yellow Lee dippers to put rice into the cases to roughly an 1/8" below full. Put another wad on top and crimp a bit. I Elmers Glue seal the top. This dries white and I black permanent mark an "R" on top to tell from shot loads that have the number, size of shot on top. Now ready for small pest control with minimal collateral damage. I use these in the house even. The upper glue coated wad the most likely to damage part.

I've been loading some 45 colt with N340 and 270 grain Thunderheads. It has been going well until I got up to 8.5 grains and my Dillon 550 started throwing over +/- .1 variance with the powder. I don't find that acceptable.
I'm guessing it's time for a cleaning of that powder die.
I have a question for you Dillon fans. At what grain weight do you stop using the smaller powder throw and go to the larger one. I've seen both 15 and 20 suggested. How dependent is this on the powder used?

I've always used the large bar with 14 - 15 grains of HS6 (and above).
Recently cranked down a large bar and 12.4gr of AA#7 was a low as it would go.
FWIW,
Paul

Haven't shot my Harton 44 Mag in a while so I loaded up 50 240gr Dardas SWC's, 44 mag brass, 8.5gr Unique with Federal Large Pistol Primers. Haven't tried much with Unique in 44 Mag,( used it more in 357 and 41 Mag) so I'm curious how these shoot. Expecting it to be a fairly easy shooting load. Hopefully will get to try them out sometime this coming week.

Another that is not bad in the recoil department is the 250-265 with 9-10grs of Unique. Matts sells the 265 Ray Thompson design, that serves this purpose well.
If you find the 44 mag recipes are too much then try going to a 44 SPl case with the smaller amounts of powder.

I've gone up to 21gr of 2400 with that same bullet in that gun. Figure that the 8.5gr of Unique should be a nice pleasant load for paper punching.

I loaded up 6 dozen 285 grain plain base Keith bullets from Montana Bullet in 45 Colt Starline brass with RP LP primers and 12 grains of HS-6 for my mid size Ruger Flat Top 4 1/2 inch. I tested them out to 40 yards and they produce dead on 2 1/2 inch 6 shot groups at that distance. They were causing a pretty impressive swing on my steel plate at 40 yards as well. The plate is 1/2 inch thick AR550 steel 18 x 18 and it was swinging a good 1 1/2 to 2 inches with each shot. That is pretty close to the same impact my 45-70 with 405 grain Remington factory loads has. The recoil was snappy, but easily controlled for follow up shots. I think these will make great every day working around the ranch carry loads for coyote, feral critters (pigs or dogs) or even a whitetail if the opportunity presents itself. I did not chronological them, but I suspect they are in the mid 900 to 1,000 fps range. What say you?

Sounds like you've hit on an excellent load. Great work! I assume you're talking about the RCBS 45-280. I have an MP mould that casts that bullet and it's my favorite 45 Colt bullet. I used that bullet 2 or seasons ago, loaded to 1025 fps, and shot a meat buck and a javelina with it. I recovered the bullet from the buck- Cholla

Loaded up 100 327 sledgehammers and 64 rounds of 475LB with the Lee 475-325 WFN. I've had this Lee mold for two years, figured it was time to have it earn it's keep.
Tomorrows schedule includes a bunch of 357 topped with Mihec's copy of the 358-429 and a couple of boxes of 454 with the Hornady 300 XTPs.
