Rey, that is a fine looking target, I would hide that one in the safe, Callshot or Tyrone will be sneaking around trying to snatch that beauty!!

Wayne, I've used the same 3 bullets you mention, plus the Bradshaw/Martin on deer or antelope but I haven't seen the shock waves you mention. Mine have been a little bit farther out but I still say the 357 Maximum or the 41 magnum is my #1 favorite revolver..... I know that's 2 revolvers but I learned my math from Tyrone Dick

A good friend of mine just shipped 3 semi loads of hay to Texas. A lot of good people out there!

Very nice find Huey & a great save! Over 40 years ago I had a table at the Pocatello Gun Show & a guy handed me a rifle he wanted to trade. I opened the bolt & a loaded round fell on the table, the safety was already off. My first thought was to punch him I was so mad, he started to make excuses but I just ask him to leave then I set down, I was shaking really bad. I could smell liquor on him as well. Glad everything went ok & you went home with a great 30 carbine & we all are thankful you handled it well.

Ronnie, I believe 1200 yds but I easily could be wrong. Glenn Swaggart would know right down to the inch! Me & Ken O'Neill took a few shots at it a few years back with one of Bob Bakers round butt guns, can't remember the caliber but I do know it was a fair piece out there. Looked like a Texas grasshopper.

Rey, well you can tell from 9 pages of replies that "Punta" has been one of the best reads on here for quite a while, I sure did enjoy it. Sometimes light weight bullets just don't get inside, and I've heard that Nilgai are pretty tough hombre's. Perhaps that plastic tip worked against you this time?

A real shame, one fatality so far & many thousands of animals lost, horses, cattle, etc. Many homes as well, people have lost everything.

Very nice gun you picked up & good advice, it will save you a few primers working up a load if you're using the Bradshaw/Martin bullet. Send some target photo's!

Interesting question, never really thought about it the way you've worded it but I'd have to say it would depend on if the caliber was loaded to it's full potential. If that's the case then I would include the 41 magnum & go up from there. Any of the magnums can be loaded down but the case head is still stamped "magnum". Many of my 44 magnum loads are only 10 grs of Unique with a good cast bullet, not much of a magnum load really. Hope that makes sense.

An awful lot of Buffalo (Bison) were killed with pure lead & the penetration was many times amazing, but I think right now we are going on a fishing expedition with all of these variables.

What you want is a tough bullet, some hard bullets are not tough, they are brittle. Shooting a bear in the head isn't a common shot most times but that's what you called for so stay with the Keith style or LBT style bullets at a velocity you can handle & when he says whooph shoot him just above the whoopher! Me, I would try & break both shoulders, big target & pretty easy to do on the bears I've shot. 700-800 lb bears are like 1000 lb elk, pretty rare but there are out there. I've killed 26 & never seen one. The photo in the middle is one of my bigger black bears (6 1/2") you can see the skull isn't all that big, even though it's a large bear. That's only 2 1/2" between the eyes & if he's moving you don't have much of a target...and if you're moving you don't have much of a target so take your pick. Me, I'll break the shoulders on a dangerous animal if its close. Dick
