Maybe up to 230 gr Keith style at most. I have a Lipseys 4 5/8 44 special flattop Bisley and love the size of that gun. I would like another in 41 mag with a 5" barrel that would be legal for hunting here in Ohio. I keep trying to make the same decision. I'd have to double check but I don't think a Keith (410459) would fit in the 357 flattop cylinder. I think the Keith will work in 41 Spl brass but not magnum. A plain 215gr swc will work.

I can't believe you posted this. I have the EXACT same problem. With the exact same pistol! Brand new and never fired. I've taken it apart and can't find anything wrong. I got so frustrated with it that I put it aside (just really busy lately). I too had this happen just last week with a new Bisley Flattop 44spl. I don't know what the problem, I took everything apart to clean the factory lube, replace springs and lube the action and it seems fine now. I will say that the action on this one is no where near as clean as my other NM Flattops. Time will tell.

I had a similar question about my 870 and called Remington customer service and they gave me the info (mine is from 1951) over the phone.

Is there science behind all of this or is it strictly a matter of personal preference?
What I mean by that is, what is the theory behind the grip shape that makes it work. Many say that the SAA has the perfect grip. Why? I've been shooting my Flattop 44spl since they were first introduced and I'm still trying to warm up to the grip.
I have fairly large hands, xxl gloves minimum, but I don't have fat fingers. The plowhandle grip seems too cramped for comfort. It seems like it would be better if the front strap did not curve the way it does. Also, to my mind, the grip should not be wider at the bottom that it is at the top, after all, the shortest fingers are on the bottom.
Having said all that, I've been shooting my Bisley Blackhawk for over 20 years and couldn't be happier. Is the answer to just shoot Bisley's? Could an XR3 be modified in a way that would make me happy?

I bought these from McMaster-Carr. They are under $3 each and will cover all calibers I own. For an extra $1 I bought a box at the craft store to store them in. I didn't see any reason to buy a set with 240 pins I'll never use.

As with any new adventure in reloading, work up slowly. 20gr. of 2400 is too much in my Bisley Blackhawk. I settled in on 19grs. or so about twenty years ago and have been happy with the results.

I would say sight it in before you do anything. My flattop is the same way but when I sighted in for my chosen load the sight is just high enough to clear the hammer. I'd rather not grind anything that does not require it.

Lyman 46th has data for a 220gr Keith (410459). 20.0grs. is max for 2400, I've been using 19.0 for 20+ years with zero complaints. Make sure you work up to it though.

I bought a Blue 4 5/8 44spl when they were announced. I'm very pleased with the fit, finish and accuracy of the gun. However, I think I would rather have a Bisley model and would have waited had I thought they were going to be next.

When I had my L Frame converted to DAO they removed the SA notch from the hammer so that it could not be cocked. I didn't want a situation where the gun could be cocked with a spurless hammer. If I replace the hammer with a new one I'm back to where I started.

I had my 696 out to the range last weekend and my 250K pushed by 7.5grs of Unique clocked a ten shot average of 820fps. As an aside, a 180gr XTP-HP over 8.0grs of Unique went 877fps.
Both of those loads were easy shooting loads, I don't think I would push the 250K any harder but I may see if I can boost the XTP a little bit. I'm trying to find a load that will duplicate factory ballistics with that one.
