I’m still waiting for the 45-70 to come back home with a new matching ( the 500 JRH BFR ) Bisley grip…
But my kydex got here last weekend, I’ve got a cold this weekend, and it’s pretty cold outside… so I rounded up all my leather working tools, some I’ve not seen for 4-5 years… I cut out my thicker leather piece that will be the backer behind the holster, that the shoulder straps will attach to, and that the cartridge loops will go on…
Cut out a few small pieces, and sewed the “toes” into the ends of the main holster piece, forming the tray that will hold both sizes of BFR’s…
Since I’m not using a form, or pattern, the parts like the ends that were sewn in, will be adjusted by shape, as well as nearly every piece, and while I am sewing the pieces together, I’m knotting my thread on the outside, and once I’m happy with the shapes and sizes of each piece, it’ll be cut apart, and all the pieces dyed, once restitched I’ll dye again, but at least I won’t have to worry about the light tan vegetable tanned leather, not getting color deep down in the stitching
Took quite a few pictures today, and after a short break, I’m hoping to cut to rough shape, one of the sheets of kydex, and form it into a “C” shape, the rough shape of the leather… a quick look on the www says “about 400* for forming and shaping… eventually I’m hoping to shape it a blend between the long and short frame, of the BFR’s… today just looking for a basic “C” shape for the bottom half of the back, the full bottom of the tray, and the lower half of the front

2 room walk in gun / safe room… guns are displayed on the walls, and vinyl padded storage benches surround the room… ammo goes in the benches under the guns displayed on the walls

the 14" Contender Barrels I kept after my gun sell off 2 years ago, were the 35 Remington, 357 Maximum, & 45-70...

As do I… btw… mine has a 4.80” barrel… that would seem to be the perfect barrel length for a 480

Thinking the 30-30 case is a good volume…honestly I regret letting go of my 14”Contender in 7-30 Waters… it was easy enough shooting, that I even used it for prairie dogs, yet it’s plenty for deer

I have a "tactical" Contender, that wears a flashlight... was really designed as a truck gun, to shoot skunks at night

I have a 610, that I chambered to 10mm Magnum ( it's a bigger gun than the GP-100 ) I have a Clements built GP-100 in a custom 10mm Rimmed cartridge ( no big gap for the moon clips )... my 610 I bought new, & had to go back to S&W 4 times, until they fixed the excessive headspace issue... my builder told them the headspace measurement, & S&W said it was unsafe to shoot, & yet it took 4 times, to correct the problem... the 4th time, included a note from the area sales rep. before my builder would chamber it for 10 Mag... they did seem to futz with the trigger each time it went back, so now it has a fantastic trigger... no builder worth his salt will chamber a GP for the 10mm magnum cartridge, the cylinder is too thin... so if you are wanting to shoot rocks & dynamite 10mm loads, & you can find a good 610 I recommend that, over the GP... but if you're happy with "normal" 10mm performance, the GP is about as small a cylinder diameter as is recommended that said, my GP-100 has become one of my favorite guns, as it received a lot of attention at Dave Clements, with Zane at LSCG, & with Michael Gouse Engraving... it wears a factory GP "compact" grip ( same size as an SP grip, but fits the GP on the inside ) The 10mm rimmed cases are made from either 41 special, or 41 Magnum cases, & I load to "normal" 10mm load levels My custom GP in 10mm Rimmed My 610 is 2nd from bottom on the left, in this older picture... it's smaller than the Dan Wessons... but it's still an N frame S&W revolver

She sure is purdy... was going to say a belt mountain base pin, but appears you already got that... this is my "perfect" 480... working on a chest holster to fit my "hunting" revolvers ( 480 Super Blackhawk is the smallest )

Don't J frame sights work??? or is there something "more gooder" about those sights??? They look longer than a J frame sight

I've only have had a cylinder crack at the index notch...
I would expect you could chuck the whole cylinder out of the gun if you were greatly exceeding the frame strength, but not the strength of a custom cylinder... but would expect you would most likely see "stretching" ( like Contenders ) where the head space would change...
agree if the chamber is damaged, that the cylinder was the weak link...
on my cracked cylinder, the frame was a flat top bisley 44 special, & some old handloads of FIL's caused the issue... the cylinder locked up, wouldn't spin in the frame window, but the frame was still fine ( one of those "weaker" flat top bisley's ) pulled a load, I'm guessing whom ever loaded them loaded very hot 44 magnum loads, & squashed them into 44 special cases...

A little while back, I picked up my 1st 3 screw... a custom, worked on by Dave Clements, back in the 80's... I bought from a forum member here... it's a 40 S&W... still had the factory grips on it... they looked a little dried out, & the grip fit was typical, not quite what I wanted to see on a semi custom... so the grip frame went off to Zane a few weeks ago... I picked out this nice set of Walnut Crotch scales, & Zane worked his magic, fitting them perfectly getting the new grips fit, kinda highlighted the wear in the finish on the grip frame... so thinking they need to get re-coated, before getting reunited with the revolver ( I'll do an introduction to the revolver with some new pictures, when everything gets put back together... )
