This is an excellent question and exactly why I've concentrated on smaller guns.
I've long since supported small game revolvers as the hunting opportunities are far more abundant.
These days, a 44 Special is my "Big Gun." Thing is, I don't feel undergunned.
I've got all the big bores, but very limited use guns.
Also why I'm building a 45 Schofield, 38-44, 44 Special, 45 Cowboy Special and 32-20/327 Federal right now.
The price and availability (lack of) of components goes far on the "Special" Cartridges...

45 Colt and under, everything from steel to hogs and on down. Over 45 caliber is just steel and paper.

.Starting in the mid 60's, using everything from the 357 magnum up through the 480 I took many, many deer in Idaho, Utah, Texas, Wyoming & Montana, mostly with iron sights. Also 12 elk, 6 bears, 8 antelope, 1 cougar, 3 feral hogs, 5 Javelina, a bull moose & quite a few African animals from Cape Buffalo on down. On the two safari's I used a 475 Freedom Arms & also on this latest trip I used a Ruger bisley 45 & a FA 41 magnum. All my life I've depended on cast bullets & mostly on iron sights except for a very few times & both trips to Africa where a scope is the law. Over all those years probably my most used caliber has been the 41 magnum with a 230 gr Keith cast bullet with 17.0 grs of 2400. The 44 magnum is a close second using the 250 gr Keith over 21.0 grs of 2400. Both in 3 screw Ruger's for the most part & then Ruger bisleys later on. Thousands, probably tens of thousands of rabbits, rock chucks, ground squirrels & other types of small game also punched the time clock against different calibers & cast bullets & it ain't over!
