They banned cougar and bear hunts with dogs here in Oregon. Now they have cops shooting them in school yards in front of the kids... after they saw the cougar eyeballing the little lunch entrees running around on the playground. Politicians at their finest. You know, making things safer for all of us.

You know, making things safer for all of us. This is exactly right. Guarantee you, those Cougars wouldn't give those kids a "Sporting Chance."

Well ... Oregon has Portland, so what would one expect? Exactly right... if I could find a job that pays close to what I have here we'd be out of this place.

I read the book prior to your posting it on here. (I enjoy hunting with hounds so spend my winter nights next to the woodstove reading every book about hound hunting after spending the day in the field with my pack of beagles) I too was intrigued with the revolver he carried with him. I wasn't intrigued enough to have my own made, but after seeing yours, I may have to replicate something in kind! Thanks for posting the history as well as your fine tribute. It looks fantastic!!!

I believe the reason behind the small caliber for mountain lions is that you shoot them in the tree and wait for them to bleed out, then fall to the ground. If you used something large, the cat may jump down at the shot and tear into your dogs before it finally expires. Just what I've read...

So, any updates on this gun? Game taken, honest wear from being carried in the field? Did you get a holster for it?
Inquiring minds want to know!!

Sadly, the gun has neither been carried or hunted with.
It's one of those items I wanted built and put in reserve for retirement.
It has been to the bench a number of times. The gun loves the heavier 113-115 grn Coated Cast Bullets. I'm ok with that as I want to use the 113 RNFPs that are so similar to early Bullets.
I knew about Clements' Retirement Plans, so decided not to wait on the build...

Was talking to The Boss the other night and all of mine have been built as semi-safe queens...get them out now and then, burn some powder and put them back. Thinking I might take one of the newer ones hog hunting next year, just for kicks and giggles...Harton is working on a 44 special Uberti Bisley turning it into a quasi flattop target meets Keith#5 with a 10" barrel and other niceties, and Huntington is fitting a 12" Colt Buntline New Frontier barrel (plus RW Bisley Dragoon and then JRH gripframe treatment) to a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt...I think both would be awesome longer range guns, and I'm jonesing to see what either would do to a pig...plus, sausage

I look forward to seeing pictures and range reports from each of those.
Glad to see another custom built on a Uberti too!!!
With all my Customs, Semi-Customs, FA and other fine revolvers, nothing brings a smile to me like shooting my Uberti Flattop Target Revolvers.

I don't know why I haven't said anything about this project yet, but I love it. Your improved remake is a really neat, not to mention subtly gorgeous revolver. I just keep going back and looking at the original and at yours. The one that is really stuck in my mind, and has been for some time, is that well worn looking old Buffalo Seville Linebaugh built for Seyfried in the pic with his first cape Buffalo along with his tracker. When a friend/customer told me Bowen was doing small frame Nimrod barrels and showed me his Bisley .22 remade, my mind instantly went back to the barrel banded Seville. Your project has got my wheels turning again, but I've gotta try to block it out so I can focus on working up a load for the one I just got!

"Stuck in my mind" is exactly why I had to build this gun. I know we have superior options to all this today. But, that wasn't the point.
I think reproduction of Seyfried's Gun would be an excellent project. You'll have a book of loads worked for your gun before any gunsmith can possibly complete your project.

To your point, I have no practical reason whatsoever for a Lion Hunter clone, yet find myself planning on building oneā¦
