Lee.....this site is one of the better places to talk to folks like Mr. Taffin, Bradshaw, Murback, Mr. Jurras and even yourself 'n your Dad, among many others. Being a gun nut for near 45 yrs, one sees a lot, learns a lot and makes some darn good friends to boot. We don't need the 'know it all', who have no respect for our hero's. Let's keep it the way you state in your sticky.....I really like it here.

I have posted this in this catagory because of exactly what Lee Martin said at the very first post - about the arguing, fights, and "Don't confuse me with the facts,'cause my mind's made up".
I have been a gun builder for 30 years - a serious one in the last 20. From my injection mould building experience I have applied more than basic machining experience into the gun building fixtures I have made 0B'nell's 080-745-002)and the gun building itself. Pop was a watchmaker and during WWII he worked in the Instrument Lab at Langley. His Dad was an old time gunsmith that really knew metal. 100 years ago or so I had a dream of doing this for others. The gun climate of the '90's and especially the 2000's changed all that.
That said I detail photo all I do, much like Lee's .44 build he did a while back. I learned a lot about posting and just setting the sequence to such from that. But I also learned that somewhere, somehow there's going to be some jackass that it going to mess it all up for the others that are truly interested. He felt like he had his peanuts pissed in because Lee didn't snap a quick reply right back to him about some obscure question that he was probably only asking trying to sound smart.
While he was complaining he also didn't take into account for one second how much trouble it is to really document a build and put it on one of these forums. It's akind to another job to really do it right. If you don't believe this, try it sometime.
Members, I have written up and photoed some How To's on a few forums and I believe I'm familiar with the ones Lee alluded to but didn't mention. I did this purely for two simple reasons - to try to pass on something (I'm 66) and to try to ignite a spark in those that are just reading about doing something with their guns into someone that will get off the curb and try to.
To get together with an like interested friend that may have a lathe and you have a mill. I wrote a story about Mr. Mac, a machinist in my old neighborhood that got me started down this avenue. I'll send it to anyone that PM's me - not because it's so great but because it tells a great story about an on the outside crusty old man that helped this old Scout be one.
I'm building Ruger #3. And yessss I am using .357 Max cylinders. Gosh, those pore guns. Reminds me of all the frogs hopping aroung with no legs.
Lee, my compliments - always.
Will '69-'70
ps: If anyone would like to see an ultra detailed photoed build thread on this line bored interchangable cylinder (.44Mag/.44 Special)Ruger #3 just say so. Buuuuuuut I warn you, there will be two.357 Maximum cylinders killed in the process. As Lewis Grizzard said, "graveyard dead".

I believe that it's way too much gun for a .357, even a Maximum. That said, I wouldn't be opposed to having a Bisley .445 built.

I just joined yesterday, but I have used this forum as a valued source of information over the last year. I certainly intend to follow Lee's guidelines.

I want to thank all the knowledgeable gentlemen that post here purely in the interest of sharing the joy and rapidly diminishing skills available in todays' society. I have asked more than one semi-ignorant question of Lee and Mr. Jurras, who both treated me kindly. I'm involuntarily retired and look forward to checking the Forum every day to see the new posts and pictures. A job very well done, indeed. Thank you. TangoCharlie

Lee, I truly appreciate what you had to say in the first post (here). This is an excellent site for REAL information.
I started competing in smallbore shooting in 1954 when I joined a fledgling gun club (less than fifteen members) and helped build it into a FINE shooting facility. We now have eight hundred members. I went from smallbore, to handguns (NRA Bullseye and a National Class rating in IPSC). Along the way I became interested in large caliber handguns.
While still in the National Guard and with nearly no discretionary income (I was newly married) I found a Super Blawkhawk. It had been used/abused a bit but with some minor work (I was trained as a machinist) I was able to restore it mechanically and in the process did a trigger job. It had some holster wear but was really what we consider today as being a "shooter". We had some National Class handgun shooters in our club by this time, so I had a standard of comparison. My used Super was the most accurate big bore revolver in our club. It whacked me on the knuckle so it got fitted with a set of Pachmayrs. They may be ugly to some, but they allowed me to shoot the Super to it's (and my) potential. I still have that fine revolver, and, frankly, cherish it.
I was an unabashed fan of Elmer Keith. His little blue book, "Sixgun Cartridges and Loads" published in about 1936 was a treasure trove of information (a number of people on this forum rank well with Elmer) and I started casting my own bullets and reloading when I was just a teenager (my father was a confirmed gunny).
At my rather advanced age, I still cast my own bullets, reload, and shoot regularly. I no longer hunt with the handgun as I am a bit "long in the tooth" to drag a deer out of the woods. However, I have many happy memories of hunting, not only deer, but edible small game with the handgun. Squirrels, rabbit, showshoe rabbit, and grouse are among my favorite targets for the table. I grew up on a farm, so roaming the woods with a handgun came early to me.
My personal reason for being on the several forums (including Virtual Weber as I am a SERIOUS griller and smoker, also) is simply to share my experience in helping newcomers to the sport get a leg up. I was helped by many an old timer and don't forget the many kindnesses given to me.
Lee, you have developed a FINE site, here, and you and your many friends are to be commended. The trolls will just have to find somewhere else to play...

I looked at this forum for a while before joining and one of the main reasons I joined was it was about the guns not a bunch of on line silly slap fights. Good forum and I will do my best to help keep it that way.

I understand there is no selling on this site, but you can post links to stuff being sold on other sites in the lounge?

I understand there is no selling on this site, but you can post links to stuff being sold on other sites in the lounge? singleactions.proboards.com/board/5/linksWe have a section for that. Also, it's fairly common to sell non-firearms on this site. Only the sale of firearms is expressly forbidden. (cuz the site hosts will shut us down.)

We aren't allowed to sell firearms as mentioned above, but we can still sell things. The "lounge" used to be the classified section. When ever I have something to sell, I'll put it in the lounge.
