I've never had much interest in the .44 spl But I saw this gun at the local gun show saturday and I just had to have it. So I ordered some brass from Starline Loaded up some 250 grain Keith Bullets on top of 18 grains of H110 I got to shoot some today. It seems the front sight is to short Bullets are grouping about 8 inches high at 50 yards Other than that and a trigger job Its good to go Its a real Handsome piece of Ordnance I Usually send my guns to David Clements but with shipping prices so high it would be nice to find a gunsmith closer to home Any of you guys know of a good smith in Kansas? Ruger would probably replace the front sight for free and might even pay shipping. I know they have done that for others' 44 Specials.

You'll come to love that gun! PS Ruger just replaced the front sight on my 41 magnum Bisley for free!

That's my first 44 Special, too. It's already a favorite, even though it is back with Ruger for a couple items. My gun shot about 6-8 inches high at 25 yards, but groups ran 2-3", too, which is good for these handloads. I just loaded up some inexpensive 240 grain swc's with the beveled base to about 900 fps.
I hope Ruger gets mine fixed up and returned shortly. I am having withdrawl symptoms!

I think you have great taste in firearms! The only new Rugers I've bought in many years were very similar to yours. Very neat revolvers.
I have two. A 5.5" that I sent to Mr. Munden for some fine tuning and a 7.5" Bisley that sits in it's box.
I shoot the heck out of the 5.5" gun!
You are gonna enjoy shooting that revolver.

Fiveshooter Welcome to the .44 club. You are going to enjoy that six-gun. It's incredibly fun to shoot with some of the lighter loads too. Unique & Titegroup give mild loads that are accurate & fun to shoot. You are going to be hooked! Frank

I have the same gun and the same problem. I've had the action worked by Harton and it shoots very well except that the front sight is WAY too short and the POI is way too high even at short range. I doubt I would ever send it back to Ruger though, as from what I've heard, they might return it to stock form prior to returning it.

Sounds like a candidate for an aftermarket front sight with interchangeable blades.

Sounds like a candidate for an aftermarket front sight with interchangeable blades. I may just send it to Harton for a cure, but am waiting while debating whether I might prefer a longer barrel, say 6" or so. I have a standard size Bisley in .45 with a 5.5 inch barrel and it is so much easier to aim with even that small amount of extra sight radius.

well I fired a few 6 shot groups off the bench this afternoon. I was not impressed. My best group was 6 inchs at 20 yards. So I checked the Cylinder throuts they mic .431/.432 My Kieth Bullets mic at .430 so I'm gona order some .431 .4315 .432 bullets from Beartooth Bullets and see if they Shoot any better. Mark
