Nice gun, I just aquaired a New Frontier 44 Special and really want a Ruger. A local dealer has a NIB for a great price. That Ross guy does not seem to know much about 44 specials although he seems to think he is an authority. Wasn't the 44 Special a smokeless powder original? When did it ever have balloon head brass?

well I fired a few 6 shot groups off the bench this afternoon. I was not impressed. My best group was 6 inchs at 20 yards. Mark Mark, This just doesn't sound right. I would try some jacketed factory loads before I resorted to fire lapping. If you still can't get better than 6" at 20 yards, I would send the gun back to Ruger to be fixed under warranty. At the same time they could also install a new front sight. Paul

My Ruger .44 Lipsey Special (5½" barrel) and my TALO Ruger SS .44 Special Flattop with 4 5/8" barrel shoot to the sights with my "standard" 250 gr Keith (home cast from a Mihec mould for the H&G #503 Keith) ahead of 7.5 grs of Unique (for about 950 fps).
However, if my gun shot high, I would just lay a piece of copper or brass sheet on top of the sight and silver solder it on using low temperature silver solder. If you can't do it, then hopefully there will be a local pistolsmith who can do it. It will only take a few thousandths of thickness to handle it. You can compute it before you start.

Myself, I think "Ross" knows his stuff but it's certainly fine to disagree. The cure...Take two shots of "Sixguns by Keith" and get some rest. All your questions will be answered...

First off, really nice gun you have there. Lipseys seem to be hit or miss on POI. My Talo 44 Special is dead on @ 25 yards with the rear sight at midway. You may want to send it back to Ruger. They'll likely make good on it. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Wasn't the 44 Special a smokeless powder original? When did it ever have balloon head brass? Ole Ross knows whereof he speaks. Hang on, JT will tell you all about it... However: Seyfried says in his fine article “…one day soon I will write the complete story of fire lapping, showing you how to perfect all sorts of rifled barrels with the process.” Maybe somebody ought to refer him to 2Dogs' excellent missive, entitled A Contemporary Look At Barrel Leading and Related Sixgun Issues. He could save himself a lot of work! ;D ;D ;D

Not to take anything away from 2Dogs' excellent "missive" gunblast.com/FerminGarza-Firelapping.htm , but Ross wrote an article in the July 1993 issue of Guns and Ammo on fire lapping. 2 Dog's article is titled "A Contemporary Look At Barrel Leading and Related Sixgun Issues", so maybe Ross also has updated info to convey. Ross's article gives credit to work previously done by Veral Smith of LBT (Lead Bullet Technologies). Both LBT www.lbtmoulds.com/ and Beartooth Bullets www.beartoothbullets.com/ offer fire lapping kits and instructions -- both of which are mentioned in 2Dogs' article. Paul

Nothing light about a 250 gr. bullet moving along at 1200. I for one am glad to see renewed interest in the 44 spl.

Where are you in Kansas? I live in KC now, but home is in Hays. I have an old friend in the Hays area that does good work on them. If you get it to I70 between KC and Hays, I'll even drop it off for you to save on the shipping. What are you looking to have done? PM me if you are interested.

Ruger sent a call tag for my 44 special ft Bisley. It went and came back 2nd day air on their dime. They fixed the base pin latch assembly, pinned in a taller front sight and now the front sight blade sits straight up instead of being canted to the right at about 12:30.
It looks great, I just need to get out and shoot it again. They got it on Oct 10th and it came back to me today. Not too bad on the turn around time, imo.
