I would choose a 44 over all the other stuff out there.

I have a lot of handguns (not enough, though) in a lot of different calibers and I shoot them all regularly, if I can get them out of my teenage son's hands. I would not want to be limited to one caliber, however...
I would choose the .45Colt, because of its' versatility. I would sorely miss my favorite caliber, the .41Magnum and would be hard-pressed to find a comfortable way to concealed carry my N-frame .45Colt, compared to my SA 1911A1 in .45ACP. All of those big .44Magnums would be long lamented as would the various .22LR, .38Spl, .44Spl, .45Auto Rims, 9mm Lugers, and most especially my .375Supermag.
Let us all hope that it never comes to such an unfortunate state of affairs.

I like the old 45 colt. Kinda seems to be good at everything. I like how loaded down it still seems to kill good. It may not kill game dead on the spot, but they sure don't run very far.

Just added another 475L to my stack! 20-30 more and the 475 bore might be the most numerous in my set.. Almost snagged a 5 inch octagon 475 last month... Maybe I should ask John G to make me another one!

Well, I'm late to the dance but I'll put in my 2 cents worth....
I really like the .44 Special/Magnum, .45 Colt, .327 Federal Magnum (and the .32-20) and the .22 LR/WRM.
If I had only one to pick, it would probably be the .44 Magnum with the .45 Colt coming in a very close 2nd place......
I'm just glad that I don't have to pick just one..... ;D

38 Special....Economical if one chooses not to or does not have the ability to reload..Available just about anywhere..With a Plus P loading in a suitable revolver good enough for Self Defense as long as I do my Part..Accurate..Easier to teach someone new to shooting than the larger Calibers..My Wife and Children(Especially My Wife) are all comfortable and reasonably proficent with it..When it comes to Hunting, I don't see much of a problem with Small Game..Although I will admit that I had better be doing my part when it comes to a Deer..Now if this was a One Gun One Caliber question I would definetely go for a Larger Caliber..But I am going with the premise that I would have a Long Gun IE Shotgun or Rifle for that..

Skeeter Skelton would have chosen the .357 Magnum. For me, I think it would be that or .22 LR or Magnum. I'd have to think really hard to choose between the two rimfires. It's good to see some of you guys coming out in support of the "lowly" 22 rimfire(s). I fully expected to get flamed for that. I don't see why..I went with the 38 Special myself, but I think you like everyone else here is answering the question in a manner that they feel is most practical for them..I picked the 38 Special figuring I would have access to a Shotgun or Rifle when needed..If I could only choose One Gun One Caliber Period I would go with a 22 in a Heartbeat.. I wasn't going to join in on this because I can't fathom the thought, but you never know so here goes. I've been reloading & shooting the 45 Colt since 1975. We are friends, & it seems a logical choice. But,when I consider the off the shelf availability of ammo or componets across the country I have to lean toward the 44 mag. Then again, I'm about 90% sure that a 1911 is my favorite handgun, so i could go with a 45 ACP & be served well.
Forced to choose ?
+1 for the 22 LONG RIFLE

First thought was 45 Colt. But I would have to think long and hard about 45ACP. After learning the possibilities of this caliber in a revolver, especially with 45 Super brass. And being able to use a 1911 for concealed carry, I find the 45ACP pretty hard to beat as a one caliber with multiple guns.

Having both, I would have to say that the .45's go with me a lot more the the .44's. For years the .44 was the only game in town, but the .45 came along and there has been no turning back. Especially if you do reload and cast.

Axe - Leave Galagher alone!! PLEASE!! I've got two there that I'll be lucky to get back casue of you!! I'd have to go with a .45 as I am a Linebaugh convert.......... I do tote my .44 Special regularly..........I'd pick it as a close 2nd. For my third pick it be the .500Linebaugh............ For my forth pick it would be the .41 Mag For my fifth pick it'd be my .22LR THis is just for today. Tomorrow the order may change!! ;D Ok, I'd go with the .45 if I had too
