Am heading for camp in a few hours. Will help get the new frig/freezer being hauled up, into the building and placed. I've already taken a new fire extinguisher, microwave, Croc-Pot and a trauma kit, tourniquet and Quik-Clot up. Will also install a burlap camo "skirt", blind, onto a treestand.

I started working on this one this afternoon. The gun is a Texas Longhorn Arms Improved #5 in 45 Colt. TLA guns have two piece grip frames like Colt and USFA but a main spring strut like a Ruger so they have the strut seat on the front strap like a Powers two piece grip frame. Interestingly enough, they also have dual grip locator pins both of which are smaller in diameter than those found on the Ruger guns. Since it has a two piece grip frame I decided to make a set of one piece grips for the gun since I have an order for a set coming in next week. When I went to learn from Alan Harton last spring we did a set of one piece grips for one of my USFA guns but thinking that two heads are better than one, AI contacted Rob Rowen and we talked about the procedure and naturally he has a slightly different way of skinning the cat just like Roy Fishpaw had a different way. My goal is to learn from as many artists as I can the develop my own step by step that works best for me but that would not be possible without the generous help of others. I just thought you guys might want to see the inside differences of the TLA guns versus the typical Ruger or Colt.

Actually yesterday!!…….went in back yard and found buzzards on a carcass?!?! 20 yards from my back door. Turned out a yearling deer male was dead and mostly gone, I’d been out of state for 3 weeks and the wife had been out there a week after I’d left. As I walked up I noticed another deer dead in tall grass? Phoned TPWD Game warden and explained situation, he seemed disinterested which struck me as odd considering it was two deer within 10 yards of each other. One was mostly skin and bones, the other mostly intact except for anus and eyes. He asked if the looked shot and/or vehicle accident victims I explained no, nothing looked damaged on the intact one. He still was not interested in coming out or disposing of them. Gave me permission to dispose of and I waited until late dusk since i had neighbors to drive past with dead deer on a receiver rack. When I moved the intact one there was now a visible hole where there should one in front of the shoulder. Exactly where I would aim if I were taking a deer facing me that was angled a bit. Looking at the deers location they are 50 yards or so from a public road and I wondered if someone shot them at night and left them. Pissed off is a mild description of my mind set at the time, as the Mrs. and I enjoy having a few deer roam our neighborhood and bed down in our yard at night. One deer I could see as an accident or vehicle incident but two is together is suspicious to me. The fact that the game warden seemed too bothered to even come out didn’t help. Trapr

I spent the day until now in my yard. LEAVES to deal with. A pleasant chore for me. Sadly, my wife finally worked up the nerve to go thru her parents stuff remaining in the inlaw suite downstairs. Some for the womens shelter, some to GoodWill, some trash. Lots of tears shed. Ihelped get thestuff for womens shelter around and up to her car and load. Another day the GoodWill to load and haul.

Moved a couple of stands and blinds with a cousin. Then shot in a new scope on his rifle. Let him shoot my scoped 45 colt contender. He loved it! It was a good day.

Minor rebuild on my Lyman 4500 Lube Sizer, replaced some of the internals. Working once again! Ordered the parts on Tuesday from Lyman and received them this morning, not bad.

Your youngish eyes will see that better and for longer than they will open sights. Less eye strain too.

Dropped my Toyota ranch truck off to a “mechanic” in June, it sat unmoved in the parking lot all summer. Explained I wanted it back first of October for hunting season, “oh sure no problem” it wasn’t ready. Not a real issue as I’d decided to not take it with me up to Wyoming antelope camp, told them “ok, can you have it ready by mid October” sure thing sorry for not getting in it sooner. Mid October came and not ready, told them I’ll give two more weeks if they can get it ready,…….”sure thing sorry for the delay”. Picked it up yesterday with the explanation that there is a hole in the #4 cylinder that they saw when they “scoped” it. They did a compression test on it and they got zero compression on #4 and only 35# on #3. Then went ion to say the valves are opening and closing and there must be an exhaust leak or blown gasket. When I dropped it off in June I told them my thoughts to the running rough was due to a gasket leak or vacuum leak.
Today I pulled the head and lo and behold,…….there is NO HEAD GASKET at all!!! My guess is one of the previous owners decided to assemble without a gasket and promptly sold it to the next owner, my guess is either owner 1, or owner 2 sold it to owner 3, since owner 3 didn’t strike my as having much mechanical aptitude and supposedly only owned it for 6 months. It was rough running when I bought it but would Idle and ran OK, and since I was just going to use it as a slow moving ranch truck didn’t really care much.
Tomorrow I’ll put a straight edge on it and measure it to see if there is much warpage, I had previously purchased a new complete head and assorted other parts, so maybe I’ll get this done on my own in the next few days, in time for my first trips to the hunting lease.
What sucks the most is that if the mechanic shop I dropped it off to had simply done their job back in June or July, it would be running right now. Instead I’ve lost 5 months of time that I could have done the work myself if I had needed to.

Buddy has surgery and asked me to come out and feed his cattle for a couple weeks and today was the last day thank goodness! Five front end loader buckets of silage hauled from the pit to the feed bunks all outside during an atmospheric river event then 1/4 of a big bale of hay put in the hay feeders all by hand. I’m too old for this stuff but he needed the help while his hired hand was gone.
