240 250 grain.... for Black bear hunting. I emailed Double Tap ammo about thier hard cast 240 hard cast bullet. I think they said it's 22 BHN. Basically want a hard enough cast to penetrate the top of it's head in a deer stand. I thought about a solid bullet too.
As far as a solid... guess just any one would be good ? Is there any one in particular that is better than another?

I've shot one black bear in my life and it was with my SA long slide 45 setup with a 45 super load which was a 265g CP WFN at 970fps. Hit it in the shoulder and the 265g punched through both sides wrecking everything in its path without asking many questions, bear was about 275-300lbs. I don't know how big the bears are near you but I'll just reiterate the above and say a nice 240-250g 44 at 1000fps or greater should have no problem with the task.

Black bears are not as tough to penetrate as the bigger bears which you all know which they are. In my neck of the woods Black bears can, and often do, reach 700 to 800 pounds. The majority of them don't. Most the locals use 30-30's and 243's for hunting them.
I wasn't surprised in the least that that 45 super from a 1911 penetrated a bear completely and wrecked everything inside.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT "HARD CAST" BULLETS, ESPECIALLY AT HIGH VELOCITY AND CLOSE RANGE, ARE NOT INVINCIBLE.

What you want is a tough bullet, some hard bullets are not tough, they are brittle. Shooting a bear in the head isn't a common shot most times but that's what you called for so stay with the Keith style or LBT style bullets at a velocity you can handle & when he says whooph shoot him just above the whoopher! Me, I would try & break both shoulders, big target & pretty easy to do on the bears I've shot. 700-800 lb bears are like 1000 lb elk, pretty rare but there are out there. I've killed 26 & never seen one. The photo in the middle is one of my bigger black bears (6 1/2") you can see the skull isn't all that big, even though it's a large bear. That's only 2 1/2" between the eyes & if he's moving you don't have much of a target...and if you're moving you don't have much of a target so take your pick. Me, I'll break the shoulders on a dangerous animal if its close. Dick

[/quote]Never heard of anyone purposely head shooting a baited bear. What is your thought process on this? I head shot my first Bear and at least 5 more since. Used a head shot on 50 hogs, a couple Bison, lots of others. When you shoot them in the eye or the ear, it’s lights out. Period. What’s not to like about boom, flop?? When you’re extremely close it works well, I would rather have a nice broadside shot at 50’, with a bear NOT looking at me. They usually run where there looking.

Seen too many animals leave teeth or jaw bones behind because people thought they were good enough to perform head shots on purpose. I do not recommend or advocate them, in a self defense situation “go for it” because that’s what it takes to STOP an animal, a CNS hit. Otherwise, vital internal organs not cranium.

Keith bullet, -640 design, LBT LFN-style, any of those types work. 22bhn is too hard. Possibly brittle. I try for 15-16bhn and 1100-1200fps on black bear. 240-270grs, when I used the 44mag years ago. It's probably been 20yrs since I killed one with a 44, but it worked well.

I've shot Lino rifle bullets at thin metals and what I saw was a puff of smoke from the Lino bullet exploding. You need alloy Lino so it's not so brittle.
