Those short FA cylinders work out pretty good here in the deep south vortex.... Works out good for all the boys who aren't afraid to spend a few bucks! Of course comparing the cost of a FA with the cost of a proper custom is a pretty scary undertaking... Seems that there simply isn't a low buck way out if you want the best!

The Freedom cylinder length is a fact, but that does not mean that the performance is lacking in the field

\ The cylinder length is shorter than any of my customs made on a Ruger frame. The original 475 case was 1.4" made from 45-70 brass. The current factroy 475 brass amd factory loads are a bit shorter due the the M-83 Freedoms cylinder length. The new brass is much better than the 45-70 brass. Here's a picture of a 475 cylinder with the old wildcat version and the std .475linebaugh round chambered and side by side. measuring the case length see for your self the cut 45-70 case is 1.400" the new factory 475 is 1.395" less than a 100th of one inch! what was changed was the bullet nose from .400" to .370" still less then .040" to the OAL so whats your point of the "short cases"?

I see said the blind man! Nothing says it better than pictures... I always keep an eye out for a 475 case forming die set... Anyone know if it is still SOP for custom Rugers to be cut for the 45-70 case head? Or do they just cut for the commercial manufactured brass?

I never recess my cylinders because it's another machining step (not to mention another thing to clean). I do cut my ratchets to except the larger rims however. -Lee www.singleactions.com

The spec length for the 475 brass today is 1.385 Jack Huntington was shortening the 45-70 brass to this length and turning the rim down and called it the 475 Huntington lite. RCBS made dies for him, This was done to chamber in a Freedom revolver and have the loaded length short enough to crimp in the crimp grove. Buffalo Bore loaded the first factory 475 cartidges and used this spec. Yor brass may be 1.395 but the spec is 1.385 In the real world as I stated above matters, it is only minutia and nothing more, but that is what these type threads are about

are we talking about Jack Huntington's wildcat that was used for the first 757 or are we talking about SAAMI spec's for the factory .475Linebaugh, Starline lists there 475 brass @ 1.394" to 1.399" sounds like 1.4" OAL to me here's the link for there brass. www.starlinebrass.com/index.php?cPath=1

Veral Smith made a mold for .475 w/.360 nose for FA guns. I don't have a FA in .475L but bought the mold from his sale list awhile back because the mold was cut for .478 dia. I needed it for a Linebaugh .475. I figured my need for a 420 gr. bullet would be rare, but I wanted to have it just in case. I can't imagine having more bullet in the case is going to restrict max. loads. I can't imagine my having a need for maximum loads. John W.TN
