325 gr at around 1400 fps is about my limit anymore; when my eyes were better, that load would hold about 1.5" at 40 yards. Not really needed for these little VA mountain bucks, though....chasin' them with a 44 Special these days.

I load my FA 454 with hot 45 class loads. Plenty of power for me. The FA displays pinpoint accuracy and one can pick up a precision FA 454 for the fraction of what a custom Bisley 45 would cost. Bingo! All I ever wanted was a hot 45 class load around 300gr - no need for heavier. Thought I would do that with an Accusport Ruger. Added up the gun, action job, some basic accessories like Belt mtn base pin, Bowen sight, good quality grips and guess what? I was within a couple hundred of a used/unfired model 83 PG in my dealer's case. I will never shoot a 60kpsi 240-260gr load - don't want to one bit. Some folks refuse to believe a 454 can behave just like a 30-40Kpsi loaded 44mag, 45Colt or 475 ... let them believe what they want.

Some of my favorite loads in my 7.5" gun is the 255 cast bullet with a load of 231 behind it in 454 brass. Trucks along about 1100-1140 if I remember correctly and was a one hole load at 50 yards from the bench. A 255 at 1100 will take anything I'm likely to hunt BUT, I still like the flat trajectory of the upper end loads for hunting and the gun is really pretty mild recoiling with a long 10" barrel.

I was shooting with a buddy yesterday whom had a chronograph. I finally got to see what I've been shooting all these years. Cast Performance 335 gr. GC at 1572 fps. It did a job on a Foster's Beer can out at 60 yards or so... Carl

I kinda think I would rather have a 454 with a 45 colt cyclinder, than a 475. I have done killed most of the elephants around here. What do you all think?

The only reason I keep the 500 and 475 Linebaughs around my diggins is for that pesky Beer Drinkin' Armadilla we got running loose round here.....

I see your point but I like shooting my .475/.500s better then my .45s. Nothing better then a head-shot to a rabbit with one of the Linebaugh rounds.

I think Ross Seyfried had a lot to do with diminishing the popularity of the 454. [/quote]
That was 20 years ago or more. Since that time Ruger, Taurus, and Magnum Research have added the .454 to their line-up.I don't call that dimished popularity.

Good point JT.... I'd bet that the only thing with a significant impact to 454 sales are the 475 and 500 bores for the guys who have to have the biggest...

+1 My son loves his 454. I on the other hand enjoy mt 500L @ 1150 fps or so and at the same time make sure that I am using enough gun! Cheers

If a 454 won't handle the chore, you probably picked a fight that didn't need started. I'd say its as popular as ever. Tons of premium bullet choices if you buy them and lots of good mold designs in the caliber for the casters. They can be had with any choice of barrel length and are definitely enough gun regardless of how they are loaded. I don't know of anything in the lower 48 that can't be hunted with 1100-1200 fps 45 Colt loads or even a little less and be perfectly effective. However, its nice to know that you have the option to flatten her out a little if you so choose. I like my bigger ones but the 454 is my all time favorite as a hunting gun.

All that pressure does is pound the hell out of the gun and the shooter. I think Lee nailed it. Personally, the .454 just doesn't appeal to me. All that added velocity does is flatten trajectory and I can't shoot well enough to be slinging lead at big game at 150yds with a revolver. So I have no 'need' for much more than 1200fps. If I'm going with a five-shot, it'll be a .475 or .500.
