CAMP FIRE AT PDM, NICE PLACE TO SMOKE A GOOD CIGAR AND HAVE A COLD ONE. CAME TO PDM THIS MORNING (12/12/23), WILL LEAVE TOMORROW AFTER A LATE BREAKFAST. MY BUDDY DENVER IS WITH ME. WE ARE THE ONLY HUNTERS IN CAMP. SLOW DAY, ONLY PIGS WE SAW WERE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE. DID NOT SEE ANY SPIKES NOR COW NILGAI. SAW LOTS OF BULL NILGAI BUT NO COWS. AFTER A LATE BREAKFAST I WENT TO THE CAMP SHOOTING RANGE AND SHOT SOME REVOLVERS, NEED THE TRIGGER TIME (OFTEN NEGLECTED DURING HUNTING SEASON). HOPING FOR BETTER LUCK IN THE MORNING.

HUNTED THIS MORNING (12/13/23) FOR CLOSE TO 4.5 HOURS WITH NO LUCK ON HOGS, COYOTES, SPIKES OR COW NILGAI, THEN, JUST A FEW MINUTES FROM CAMP, AND A GOOD BREAKFAST AWAITING US, WE SEE 2 DEER, 1 A DOE, THE OTHER A SPIKE, 'lil bitty SPIKES, A FUTURE VERY LOW END BUCK, SO I TOLD DENVER TO TAKE 'em USING MY RUGER RANCH 223 RIFLE, AND TAKE HIM HE DID. GLAD TO GET THIS DEER OUT OF THE GENE POOL. link

I'm betting that wasn't Denver's first rodeo! Great work on removing that spike!

I'm betting that wasn't Denver's first rodeo! Great work on removing that spike! DENVER GREW UP ON A FARM IN NORTH DAKOTA AND ALSO LIVED IN MONTANA AND WYOMING. A ROOFER BY TRADE HE ALSO COWBOYED ON A LARGE CATTLE RANCH AND OUTFITTED HORSEBACK/MULE HUNTS INTO THE BOB MARSHALL WILDERNESS. HE HAS TAKEN MANY, MANY ELK, ANTELOPE AND MULE DEER. HE NOW LIVES IN SPOKANE BUT WINTERS DOWN HERE IN THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY. THIS WAS HIS FIRST TEXAS WHITETAIL, BUT HE SHOT SEVERAL BIG HOGS UP AT MY RANCH (NOW SOLD). AT MY RANCH I HAD A LEAKING CONCRETE STOCK TANK SO HE HAD ME DRAIN IT THEN HE WENT INTO IT (IT WAS ABOUT 15-20 FEET HIGH) AND USED HIS ROOFING SKILLS TO SEAL THE INTERIOR. YOU DON'T FORGET FAVORS LIKE THAT.

linkON 12/27/23 MY Compadre OSCAR AND I DROVE 100 MILES WEST NW TO OUR Lenaderos LEASE TO PICK UP A BROWLESS 8 POINTER I SHOT LAST SATURDAY MORNING WITH A 14" CONTENDER 35 REMINGTON, THEN DROVE 90 MILES TO KINGSVILLE TO DROP THE BUCK OFF FOR, PROCESSING, THEN DROVE ANOTHER HOUR OR SO TO PDM. STARTED HUNTING AROUND 3:30 P.M. DID NOT SEE ANY HOGS NOR ANY NILGAI COWS THAT WERE NOT HAULING ASS. DID SEE A LOT OF DEER/RUT ACTIVITY. I PASSED ON A GOOD 10 POINTER AND A SPIKE. THURSDAY MORNING WAS 44 DEGREES AND JUST A BEAUTIFUL MORNING TO BE IN THE WOODS. PASSED ON ANOTHER GOOD 10 POINTER AND A VERY GOOD 8 POINTER. WE WERE ON OUR WAY BACK TO CAMP FOR A COFFEE REFILL WHEN WE SPOTTED SOME DOES AND A BUCK. THEN I SPOTTED ANOTHER BUCK LEISURELY FOLLOWING A DOE. WHETHER IT WAS THIS BUCK ALONE OR THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF THE BUCKS I WAS SEEING AND PASSING ON THAT DID "IT" I AM NOT SURE, BUT THIS BUCK GOT MY ATTENTION. THE PICTURES DO NOT DO HIM JUSTICE. HE WAS A MATURE 9 POINTER THAT HAD A LW OF 160lbs. CLOSE TO A 100 YARD SHOT, HIGH SHOULDER, WITH MY MARLIN 35 REMINGTON, AND DOWN HE WENT, A FINISHER WITH MY 5.5" 45 COLT BOWEN PERFECTED BISLEY RUGER REVOLVER AND THE ACCOUNT WAS SETTLED. HAD ESTEBAN THE SKINNER SKIN HIM AND AM LETTING HIM HANG IN THE WALK IN COOLER FOR A FEW DAYS. GOING BACK TO PDM ON THE 2nd AND WILL DEAL WITH HIM THEN. AFTER WE TOOK THE BUCK TO CAMP WE HUNTED SOME MORE, HAD A LATE BREAKFAST AND HUNTED SOME MORE. AT HIGH NOON, UP CLOSE, WE SAW A 10 POINTER MOUNT A DOE AND GET'er DONE, VERY INTERESTING. THE ONLY PIGS WE SAW WERE ON THE KING RANCH SIDE OF THE FENCE, ONE GROUP OF AROUND 50 HOGS WERE SCATTERED OVER A LARGE MEADOW, PRETTY NEAT TO SEE.

Enjoying the tag along Rey, keep it up, and that's a nice 9 pointer with that classic lever 35 Remington, great shooting! I'll bet Denver has shared some great stories around that mesquite campfire in the evenings. Fun stuff! Spent 2-3 days on the King Ranch once many years ago, we were staying with friends at Falfurrias, hunting Javelina at a different place. I got 2 with my old model flat top 44 & one rattlesnake on the King Ranch. The Javelina hunt ended up being quite a rodeo! I have both of them mounted.

DICK: THE KING RANCH IS AN INCREDIBLE PLACE. IF YOU WERE STAYING IN FALFURIAS I WONDER IF YOU WERE ON THE 125,000 ACRE ENCINO DIVISION OF THE KING RANCH?

Rey, I have no idea, we were with a fellow that supplied, I believe salt water to the oil rigs, can that be correct? Anyway we stayed at his place & he had permission to go about anywhere on that massive ranch. We would pull up to a gate at one of the "pastures", I always got a real kick out of that, a pasture that was several thousand acres. A fellow would be sitting on the porch & it was his job to either allow you access or not. If he did you would bump one side of those big steel gates with your "Texas" bumper, the gate would swing open & you would drive in & the gate would close itself. I loved it!
The center pole was heavily greased so the chain would wrap around & lift the heavy gate so you could drive through. We drove up on a huge, HUGE dozer, actually 2 dozers attached to one blade & they were clearing brush, they would plow down brush & trees & windrow it to the center so it was nice & tidy, let it sit for a year or so & then burn it. Those Texan's knew how to work. Seen all kinds of horses, exotic game, cattle, all kinds of whitetail deer & "worker" camps. What a sight to see for a young rooster from Idaho.
Shot the Javelina on the west side of the highway on a different ranch, one of my funniest hunts ever, ran them with dogs & it got western in a hurry. The rattlesnake was a monster, probably 10-12 inches. I know, I know everything is bigger in Texas, and to me all rattlesnakes are as big as pythons............ A 41 magnum cast load made him into two snakes!!

I used to have a rattler skin that just the BACK fit on a finished 1x12. That was with no belly scales. Friend of mine killed it on his porch on a cool morning when he stepped out to get the paper. Talk about not needing coffee! Yeah, those "bump gates" are pretty cool. I got a heck of a kick out of seeing them for the first time. I actually asked my host if I could get out and look at the gate I was so interested. One thing on the King, you dont get out of the truck without permission unless you want to be a permanent resident.
