Yep, Rey they are chasing up here too. Sherry and I are having a good time, I walked up on a small sounder of sleeping hogs,…..heard a grunt real close and brush cracking. Undid a hammer thong and drew from a Barranti Longhorn companion faster than I thought I could. 500L with a big Randominator 485gr. HP ready to do business,….but apparently everybody ran away.

A SURPRISING NUMBER OF KUDU ON PDM, THEY SEEM TO BE DOING VERY WELL. SAW A MAGNIFICENT KUDU BULL A COUPLE OF WEEKS BACK, I AM LOOKING AT A 54" IN MY HOUSE AS I TYPE THIS AND THE ONE I SAW AT PDM WAS BETTER. I FIELD JUDGED THAT BIG PDM KUDU AS "mid 50's", WHICH WAS A PRETTY DARN GOOD ESTIMATE. HERE IS A PICTURE OF A YOUNG BULL: link

TOOK JOEY CORREA (TXHunter) AND BROTHER CARLOS CORREA, SONS OF A LIFELONG FRIEND WHO HAS BEEN SIDELINED FROM THE HUNTING FIELDS BY FAILING EYESIGHT AND A BAD BACK, TO PDM LAST WEEK FOR A FEW DAYS. JOEY LIVES IN MONTANA, CARLOS HERE IN BROWNSVILLE, BOTH EXPERIENCED AND GOOD HUNTERS. I MADE MY LAST DOE TAG AND MY ONLY JAVELINA TAG, PLUS HOGS AND COYOTES, AVAILABLE TO THEM. CARLOS GOT A SHOT AT A LARGE BLACK SOW USING A KIMBER 338 FEDERAL RIFLE AND FEDERAL 185gr FUSION AMMO, KNOCKED HER DOWN WITH SHOT # 1, SHE GOT UP, SHOT # 2 MISSED THEN SHOT # 3 KNOCKED HER DOWN AGAIN FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. THEY WALK THE APPROX 140yds TO HER AND AS THEY WERE ABOUT THERE SHE GOT UP AND LIMPED OFF INTO THE BRUSH, NEVER TO BE RECOVERED, ONE OF THOSE "WTF" HAPPENINGS. COULD'a SHOT A JAVELINA EASY BUT IT WAS NOT SOMETHING THE BOYS WEREKEPT REAL KEEN ON DOING. COULD'a SHOT A DOE EASY ON THE FIRST AFTERNOON BUT WAITED UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING WHEN JOEY USED A 308 BOLT ACTION RIFLE TO TAKE A DECENT DOE (HERE IS PICTURE OF JOEY AND THE DOE): link

NEAR PDM IS ANOTHER RANCH WHICH HAS ADDAX WHILE PDM HAS ORYX THEY ARE COUSINS AND CAPABLE OF CROSS BREEDING. SOME ADDAX ESCAPED F AND SOMEHOW 4-5 GOT ON PDM. THE OWNERS WANT TO KEEP THEIR ORYX HERD PURE SO THEY ASKED THAT IF WE SEE AN ADDAX SHOOT IT (AT NO COST). TWO WERE SHOT EARLY ON BUT NONE SHOT IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. TRAPR AND I ARRIVED AT PDM JUST AFTER 10:00 A.M. TODAY (1/8/24), GOT SETTLED IN, HUNTED/SCOUTED SOME, HAD LUNCH AT 12:30 P.M. AND WERE BACK OUT HUNTING BY 1:00 P.M. I DROVE SOUTH TO THE ADJOINING RANCH FENCE LINE THEN WE PROCEEDED ALONG THE FENCE LINE EAST WHEN I SPOTTED 2 "ORYX" BUT WHEN I PUT THE BINO's ON 'em THEY WERE 2 ADDAX, HOLY S..., WE FINALLY CAUGHT UP TO THEM. I LET TRAPR SHOOT FIRST WITH HIS MERKEL O/U 9.3x74 THEN I SHOT AT THE 2nd ONE USING MY MARLIN 336 IN 35 REMINGTON. BOTH OF US HIT WITH OUR 1st SHOTS BUT BOTH ANIMALS NEEDED SOME FOLLOW-UP. BOTH WERE PREGNANT FEMALES MAYBE WITHIN A WEEK OF BIRTHING. HERE IS A PICTURE OF ME AND MY ADDAX: linkAN UNEXPECTED BONUS AND ALWAYS GLAD TO HELP THE LAND OWNER. HUNTS FOR ADDAX ARE NORTH OF $4,000 SO THIS WAS A SPECIAL DAY FOR BOTH TRAPR AND I.

Nice work Rey, if I didn't know better I'd say you've pulled up a notch or two on that gun belt this season, you've been hunting hard! Is there anything more beautiful than a Kudu or a sable?

Running shot from behind is what caused the big hole in the butt. Bullet broke pelvis but just missed spine, travelled forward and took a lung. Finisher, was required, 9.3x74r 286gr.SP.

Trapper, congrats on getting to use that Merkel. Is it a double rifle or a "drilling" with a rifle barrel and two shotgun barrels? If so, what gauge? You could leave that weapon here for a spell while you travel around. You can pick it back up the next time you visit. LOL.
Great job guys. Never heard of an Addax before. Learn something new everyday!

Trey, it is a double rifle, over/under. I’m still tweaking loads to get two bullets of the same weight to land to the sights. I’ve got a 250 and 286gr to land with a good zero out to 150, and currently using that combination to hunt the gun till I get it figured out. 250 from bottom barrel and 286 from upper barrel, keeps them within 2” out to 150, so that is workable. The load used to regulate the rifle is a no longer produced 258gr. bullet at 2400fps, but the 250’s I load at that speed do not regulate. So it’s a trial and error process, currently the best I’ve gotten is 6” pairing of shots at 100 with 286gr. bullets, if I could get 4” pairing I’d be happy.

SPENT A FEW DSPENT A FEW DAYS AT PUNTA LAST WEEK, DEER WERE STILL RUTTING, LOTS OF DEER SIGHTINGS, HERE IS A NICE BUCK: As a kid hunting in Lampasas I'm not sure I'd have known what this critter was. Those Texas deer have sure changed from the overgrown jackrabbits I used to hunt.
