YES, I WOULD CALL IT A BIG BOAR. ASKED THE CAMP SKINNER TO CUT OFF THE LAST 8-10 INCHES OF THE SNOUT, AND FREEZE IT FOR LATER TUSK REMOVAL, AS THE BOAR LOOKED TO HAVE SOME GOOD HOG IVORY ON HIM. I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN THE MEAT OFF THIS HOG, DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE SKINNER DID WITH IT AS I LEFT CAMP FOR HOME AROUND 10:30 THIS MORNING.
3 HOGS AND 1 COYOTE SO FAR, MAN I AM LIKING THIS PLACE. BTW, IN TODAY'S MAIL I GOT MY $150 BOUNTY CHECK FOR LAST WEEK's COYOTE A9ALREADY CASHED IT).

THE GAME BIOLIGIST FOR THE 3 SOUTH TEXAS "SISTER" RANCHES GAVE US A MANAGEMENT DEER SEMINAR YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. HIS EXPERIENCE OVER MANY YEARS AND MANY RANCHES, AND BACKED UP MY SEVERAL STUDIES, IS THAT ALL SPIKES MUST GO! ONLY THE EXCEPTION WILL EVER AMOUT TO ANYTHING, THE REST ARE TOMORROW's MANAGEMENT BUCKS AND YOU CANNOT SUPPLEMENT FEED A GENETICALLY INFERIOR DEER INTO A TROPHY BUCK. THE RANCH RULE SPIKE IS THAT A "SPIKE" HAS 1 UNBRANCHED ANTLER, CAN BE A FORKFORN ON THE OTHER ANTLER.
WE HAD BEEN GIVEN 2 SPIKES AND NOW SOME OF US (ME INCLUDED) GOT A 3rd SPIKE (BUT MUST HAVE AT LEAST 3" ANTLERS) AS OUR "MANAGEMENT BUCK", SO I HAVE 2 DOES, 3 SPIKES AND A TROPHY BUCK, PLUS THE 2 COW NILGAI, 1 JAVELINA, 1 TURKEY AND UNLIMITED HOGS AND COYOTES.
GOING TO PDM TOMORROW thru WEDNESDAY, TAKING MY Compadre OSCAR, HE WILL BE COW NILGAI HUNTING. JUST CHANGED OUT MY BELT REVOLVER TO MY 5 SHOT 5.5" NIMRODESQUE RUGER 45 COLT BISLEY, USING THE 320gr RNFP BLUE BULLET @ 1,241fps, AS MY FINISHER (IF NECESSARY).

My experience shows the same Rey, while a babied and well cared for spike “may” turn into a trophy. The effort given to the endeavor is mostly wasted and wishful thinking. Getting the mouth out of the food and the genetics out of the bloodline is more beneficial

GOT TO PDM LATE MORNING YESTERDAY (11/20/23) WITH MY Compadre OSCAR, A LITTLE TOO EARLY FOR LUNCH SO WE DECIDED TO MAKE A SHORT Vuelta (A DRIVE AROUND) . ON THE WAY BACK TO CAMP, AROUND NOON, I SPOTTED WHAT I THOUGHT MAY BE A BLACK CALF GRAZING IN A FIELD. PUT THE BINO's ON IT AND CALF HELL, IT WAS A BIG PIG ON MY SIDE SO I TAKE A SHOT WITH MY MARLIN 35 REMINGTON. THE BIG BOAR TOOK OFF AND I TOOK ANOTHER SHOT, FURTHER AWAY, AND GOING AWAY FROM ME, THEN HE WENT INTO A THICK MESQUITE MOTT. ALL THE WHILE WE ARE THINKING ITS HIT. WE DRIVE OVER NEARER THE MOTT AND THERE HE IS JUST STANDING THERE. I GET OFF AND WITH MY 5.5" 5 SHOT 45 COLT IN HAND AND GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO SETTLE THE ACCOUNT. FIRST SHOT WITH THE MARLIN WAS LITTLE FAR BACK, 2nd SHOT WENT THRU AN EAR. LUCKILY WE WERE ABLE TO DRIVE TO IT AND LOAD IT UP. A BIG BOAR WITH GOOD IVORY, BIGGER THAN LAST WEEK's BOAR.

YESTERDAY (11/20/23) WAS A VERY GOOD DAY, BESIDES THE BIG BOAR I TOOK WITH MY MARLIN 35 REMINGTON, LATER THAT AFTERNOON I SAW SOME DEER, 1 LOOKED LIKE A SPIKE, I BINO'ed HIM REAL GOOD TO CONFIRM HE WAS A SPIKE, AND SENT HIM TO DEER HEAVEN WITH 1 SHOT FROM THE MARLIN 35 REMINGTON. HIS SPIKES MEASURED OVER 3" SO HE QUALIFIED AS THE XTRA SPIKE BUCK. HERE IS A PICTURE. KEEPING MOST OF THE MEAT, GIVING THE REST TO THE CAMP COOK. link

PDM UPDATE:
WENT TO PDM LAST WEEK (TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY) WITH MY BUDDY DENVER. HE CONNECTED ON A SMALL-MEDIUM HOG USING MY RUGER RANCH BOLT ACTION 223, UNFORTUNEATELY THE HOG MADE IT UNDER THE FENCE AND DIED WITHIN SIGHT ON THE KING RANCH SIDE OF THE FENCE. THE HOG WAS PART OF A GOOD SIZED SOUNDER THAT I KEEP SEEING ALONG THE NE SIDE OF PDM, THAT GOES BACK AND FORTH FROM PDM TO THE KING RANCH. THEY MAKE SMALL HOLES UNDER THE FENCE IN THE SOFT SAND, A CONSTANT JOB FOR THE FENCE RIDER AS LITTLE HOLES BECOME BIGGER AND BIGGER HOLES, AS ATESTED BY THE NUMEROUS EXOTIC ESCAPEES SEEN ON ADJOING RANCHES. HECK, THERE ARE ALREADY HUNTABLE POPULATIONS OF FREE RANGE ORYX, ADDAX, WATERBUCK AND RED LECHWE ON ADJOINING RANCHES, HAVE EVEN SEEN ESCAPED KUDU ACROSS THE NORTH FENCE. IN 50 YEARS ALL THESE ESCAPED EXOTICS WILL NUMBER IN THE THOUSANDS.
I CAME UP TO PDM YESTERDAY WITH MY BUDDY KEN WHO I HAD PROMISED A DOE TO. HE SHOT A GOOD SIZED MATURE DOE WITH HIS DECEASED DAD's OS WINCHESTER MODEL 94 30-30, USING VINTAGE REMINGTON 170gr AMMO THAT CAME WITH THE GUN WHEN HIS DAD DIED (1978). GOT THE DOE BACK TO CAMP AND IN AN ABOUT AN HOUR ESTEBAN, THE SKINNER, HAD HER SKINNED, QUARTERED, BACKSTRAPS AND TENDERS PULLED, NECK DEBONED, AND PACKED IN ICE IN KEN's ICE CHEST.
BEEN SEEING MORE DEER, ESPECIALLY BUCKS, STILL LOOKING FOR ANOTHER SPIKE FOR MYSELF (I HAVE 1 PROMISED TO DENVER), ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A COW NILGAI, HOGS AND COYOTES. I AM HUNTING THIS MORNING, HAVING A GREAT BREAKFAST AROUND 11:00 A.M. OF HUEVOS a la MEXICANA, FRIJOLES REFRITOS, TORTILLAS de MASA AND BACON (EGGS WITH DICED SERRANO PEPPERS, ONION AND TOMATO, PINTO BEANS THAT HAVE BEEN MUSHED UP AND RECOOKED IN A SKILLET, CORN TORTILLAS and BACON), AND THEN HEADING HOME.

Rey we are not seeing any rut activity here in three rivers, even the young ones aren’t pestering the does yet. But I’ve got a 250xtp load sighted for the old SW 1917, as well as one of Dicks 270 PentaHP in loads set up for the old girl. I figure 800fps should keep the XTP from exploding, like it normally does, and the PentaHP shoots to the same point so I’ll be trying to bust a pig or doe with them. Good luck and hope to see ya soon, compadre!!
