My choice when I something absolutely has to be put down… This 454 was rebuilt when I had it rebarreled. I had beat it up pretty bad over about 10K rounds. Unbelievable amount of shooting. Holy s*#t. What is your go-to load? And did you shoot that Axis deer that your fine revolvers rest upon in the photo?

Nimrod, most all of those loads that Zeus runs through those model 83's are full snort loads, he doesn't mess around. I live about 45 minutes from you in Soda Springs. Dick

Actually that axis was shot with that 454 now that you mention it. 260 FA bullet at 1890 was the load it ran a lot of the time or a 300 XTP mag at 1620. The 260 at almost 1900 is a fast recoiling load from that gun but it’s effective for deer size critters for sure.
Sixshot was with me the day I picked it back up from the rebarrel work!! That’s been a few days ago!

Dick Beautiful gemsbok bull, Sixshot! And beautiful handgun too. The ivory micarta is the most attractive of their factory offerings, imo. Soda Springs, eh? We’re practically neighbors.

If you had to settle on one load for the .454 as has previously been suggested here to me, what would it be?

For deer, I run the 260 class slugs. Truthfully, they can probably do anything you need. But my all time favorite was the 300s at 1615 or so. They were absolute hammers. Extremely accurate and hot like a truck on game. I’d run 300s if I had to choose.

I AGREE WITH ZEUS, I BELIEVE 300gr BULLETS ARE THE BEST CHOICE FOR THE 454, RUN 'em 1,500fps TO 1,700fps AND YOU WILL BE READY FOR ALMOST ANYTHING.
I HAVE PLAYED SOME WITH THE 260gr CLASS OF BULLETS AND SEEN OTHERS USING THEM TOO, AND EVENTHOUGH THE MV IS ENTICING, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THE 300gr BULLETS WORK BETTER.

My 45 300gr hunting load does 1150. I bet you are hammering them at those velocities. I get mostly bang flops as it is.

I concur with the 300 grainers. Big Moose, Bison, Big Bears, African Lion, Cape Buffalo, you get the point! It’s a killin’ machine, and extremely accurate.

Thanks, Rey, and all of y’all for confirming the authority of the 300 grainers in .45 Colt and .454 Casull. Are you all referring to 300 grainers generally as in the XTP as well as hard cast, or hard cast only?

And I ask because the biggest game I hunt each season is elk (with mule/whitetail deer, antelope, and now goat on the menu), but grizz defense is always a possibility. So I would imagine that would push me to hard cast. What ready-made projectiles do you guys like that fall into that category that are (hopefully) available?

Hard to beat bullet weight, especially when you are getting that kind of velocity. My 325 gr cast went clear through my cape buffalo but the 308 gr cast didn't. The distance was the same but the angle was different, plus I was using a Ruger bisley at 1340 fps where as some of the others had much more velocity from the 454's. My hunting buddy Larry was using a FA 454 & although he didn't shoot a cape buffalo he did take several other large animals, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Nyala, Zebra, Sable & Gemsbok with the 308 gr cast & never recovered a single bullet, they are probably still going. A good hard cast is great, I would purchase gas checked ones. You need to do a bit of performance testing to see what is the most accurate bullet, and consistently groups the best in your gun. I have found the Sierra 8830’s to be the most accurate bullet I have ever shot in my 454’s and 45’s. The Swift A frame HP and Hornady XTP shoot almost as well, with the load I developed for them.( all 300 grainers) They are estimated about 80% maximum load, before the group opening up again. Also look at the meplat on your chosen bullet. A 75-80% meplat seems to penetrate more in a straight line than a pointed or full wad cutter. I also prefer 2400 over H110 or 296, especially at 45 velocities, it’s just a little more accurate and a little less velocity. I will take accuracy over velocity any time. Just a few things I’ve found over the years.

I’ve had poor luck with hard cast on medium game, could be me, I don’t know. But a jacketed bullet has become my go to for stuff 300 pounds and less. I prefer 300 Swift AF from any 45 I plan on pushing hard, 454 or 5 shot 45. My Ruger loads for 45 colt run 300xtp mag at 1200fps or 260 Speer at 1280fps, those are my general purpose loads for 45 colt. If I were to carry a 45 colt or 454 and larger than medium game were a possibility then definite Swift AF or a good cast bullet. The 260gr bullet is used exclusively in a little 3.75” 45 colt that gets carried around for daily use here in Texas, otherwise 280 and heavier is my preference.

Depends on the cast bullets design as to how well it performed for me on medium game. A wfn works fine, but I do like an MP large or penta pin with softer alloy for deer.
