I love my Magnaported 7 1/2” .454 for hunting. It is a blast to shoot with full power loads.

I need to find the better pics of them. They are Desert Ironwood by Chig’s Grips.

For ME, they're apples and oranges. I'm kind of fond on my 97 .45 Colt, but I have fairly large hands and don't find it enjoyable to shoot with most loads. I wouldn't even consider really hot/heavy loads.
The full sized 83 454 is a different critter. Though I'll admit I don't find that enjoyable to shoot anymore either but for different reasons.
Realistically I should sell them both and buy a short barreled 83 and shoot medium loads.

Lost River Ammo's 270 grain .45 colt load fits the 97 and is very accurate.

For a primary hunting revolver, I prefer a long barreled, scoped version with a brake. Here’s the Deathdealer. Bearskinner, that is a beautiful set-up, and what a name for it. You must tell me what the grips are made of and by whom, as well as tell about the hide it rests on. Is that buffalo shot by your own hand? Very intrigued. The grip material is Corian counter top. It’s a solid resin, and when sanded to fit the grip frame, it shows layers of colors, and I think really looks great. These were fitted along with the Brake at Gary Reeder custom guns in flagstaff. Resting on a piece of Bison hide, although that one was taken with an FA83, in .475LINEBAUGH.

For that matter, it seems like there are a lot of lucky tag drawing ppl on here with regards to bison hunts. Where’s all that going down? They’re damn hard to draw here in WY. Though I did draw a mtn goat tag this year, so believe me, I am not complaining

I got one Bison in Texas at a Hunting ranch, that was going out of business. Bison and 3 hogs, $700. Those were the days! Then I found a place in Montana that raised ( free range 5,500 acres) restaurant quality Bison ( so they were grown as cattle are, all the shots etc) got 3 from them, over the years, usually 1 1/2-2 1/2 year olds, great meat hunts. Last one was 13 years ago, $1,100. Bison are not hard to hunt, with all the cuts and draws, and brush in Montana, no problem sneaking up to 100 yards or so for an easy pistol shot. Took 3 thru the ear, one thru the heart. Still a “Classic American Animal” 1- 475L,FA83, 2-.454FA83, 1- I actually used a (GASP) rifle. For my 50th birthday, I built s 7MM Mag, hunted my Antelope, and Bison that season, came home, sold the rifle, back to handguns only. Much more fun.

Greatly appreciated. And really cool. As much as I love to hunt public land, that kind of bison arrangement is intriguing to me and seems well worth it. A question, Sr. Bearskinner: did you notice a difference in the effectiveness with which the animal was dispatched across the spectrum of cartridges there, 7RM, .454, and .475? I understand that some shots were head/spine and one was heart and projectiles certainly varied etc. I suppose really what I am asking is, have you noticed any difference in the killing power between the .454 and .475 if the shot placement is appropriate and the projectile is appropriate?

The 3 ear shots, dropped straight down. (7&454) the 400 grain 475, was a heart shot, as the Bison was walking. You could see the blood pumping out both sides. He just walked off, calmly and laid down after a few minutes. I couldn’t get another shot, due to intermingling with the herd. All shots were pass thrus.

Very cool. Okay, well, I guess we established overwhelmingly what I already knew but still decided to bug y’all about: one really does in fact need a FA .45 Colt AND .454 Casull.

My choice when I something absolutely has to be put down… This 454 was rebuilt when I had it rebarreled. I had beat it up pretty bad over about 10K rounds.
