Having a longer cylinder for a short cartridge would not normally be as accurate as one designed for that particular cartridge. Unless, like S&W 25's which have a very long throat.
Don't believe me? Shoot a 38 Special out of a 357 Max barrel! The bullet rattles around in the chamber before hitting the forcing cone and bore.

Loaded conventionally that might be true, BUT some of the revolvers with long tight throats in the cylinder are quite capable of phenomenal accuracy. It all depends on what you put in them and who the shooter is. I know I wouldn't trade off or change any of those that do shoot like that.

To the best of my recollection the long cylinder trend started with the 44 mags so you could use the long cylinder bullets and loads designed for the redhawk. I think the first ones I saw were by Gallagher so you could use the Garrett load.
When I was having Clements add a linebored cylinder to my Bowen 45 colt, I had him use a maxi cylinder even though I probably don't need it, because it looks custom and thought it would be nice to have just in case

There aren't a lot of bullets which don't fit standard .45 Colt Blackhawk cylinders. One that was too long was Beartooth's 350 gr LCMN: I shot them in the 5-shot at the top of the page. They flew fine, but really no better than bullets that do fit factory cylinders. Again, the standard Blackhawk cylinder will handle just about anything viable in the .45 Colt. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Hamilton sang the praises of this one for handling the Hammerheads with aplomb...

Another advantage is forcing cone support on larger calibers. Granted, with a .475 or .500 Linebaugh, you need the full window for their case lengths. But if I were to build a .475 or .500 Special, I'd use the whole window and encapsulate as much of the cone as I could in the frame. I'd still have a little barrel protrusion though. Like Bradshaw, I'm not a fan of the "no gas ring" cylinder. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Poorboy version of Bushy's gun. Tent it to Bowen, 20 years ago to have it turned into a nimrod. S/N placement got in the way.
Ended up having Bowen chop the barrel, trigger work, base pin, sights, and send off to turnbull for color. Had SK add a set of his grips and shot it quite a bit.
I always wondered how it would do with a linebored cylinder. A couple years later I dropped if off with Clements along with a maxi cylinder and long ERH and this is what I got back. No complaints from me!

PLEASE, SO THAT I FULLY UNDERSTAND: A 357 MAX CYLINDER FITS IN A STANDARD BLACK HAWK FRAME WINDOW, WITHOUT THE NECESSITY OF CUTTING THE CYLINDER DOWN?

It needs to be shortened a bit.

I’ve found the long cylinder conversions especially useful for the .41 magnum using long bullets…
