I’ve been saving for a bit, and have a bit more to save, but I was wondering if you guys could recommend active gunsmiths who would be capable and are accepting new work.
Looking to get a no5 built in 44 mag.
Thank you!

If I wanted a No 5 right now I’d buy a TLA
If I was to build one, I would save a lot of money by not having the No 5 latch fit, which opens up gunsmith options since it’s mostly grip frame work at that point.
Details of your planned build would help.

You could get one of Ronnie Wells grip frames to start

Like PJ mentioned, if the build does not include the defining base pin latch it pretty much boils down to fitting a new grip frame which a guy can easily do at home if he willing to take his time.

If you're talking an exact copy of the Keith #5, I'd go John Powers...he does a great job with them and would be who I'd pick for that project. As others have mentioned, here's your $$$$ <click on this link>I hit him up a year or so ago after he posted a pic of a #5 he built...not counting the cost of the Colt SAA donor, if memory serves me, you're looking at used car money (including grips and engraving). Lots of weld-up for the rear sight and base pin retention...and even beater SAAs are a couple thousand in this market.

This is something I considered. can the fitting be done with hand tools and a vice? I’m assuming files and various sandpaper. I don’t have to have the base pin latch.

Thank you all for the suggestions.
I have thought of trying to track down a TLA, as I am rather fond of them.
I could also do without the latch. Andnow that I think about it I may just forego that and contact bobby tyler.
Looking for a no5 grip and octagonal 5.5 or 6 in barrel. The finer details I haven’t fleshed out yet.

Alan Harton did my #5, no latch. Installed adjustable rear sight, fit Powers #5 grip frame, Powers Bisley hammer, 55.5 inch .44 barrel, bored and chambered 9mm cylinder to .44 Special, all on a 3 screw Blackhawk. Love it.

Have a look at mine from the handgun blueprint thread...sounds like it might be your ticket...RW #5 gripframe, octagonal barrel, color cased/nitred...all done by Bobby...one of my favorites and didn't break the bank... singleactions.proboards.com/thread/11406/handgun-blue-print-thread?page=26

As you're looking, remember that Fermin makes the TLA #5 front sight...I've been trying to find a project to put that beauty on

Another option , Reeder is looking for blue bisley grip frame, trigger and hammer. He will trade you a #5 grip frame hammer ,trigger and grips . Good start on parts if you have the trading material!

I just bought a Ruger flattop 5.5" .44 Special. Added a RDW original #5 gripframe, Power Custom trigger and Bisley hammer, and a #5 basepin. It isn't a clone, but in many ways is improved. Ruger's rear sight is fully adjustable. Plus there's no functional reason to have Elmer's #5 latch when you can buy a Belt Mountain. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"
