Did S&W ever produce a modern N-frame 38-40?
What sort of power level could one expect to be safe in such a revolver?

I don't think so but own one thanks to Alan Harton.

I'd stay 20-25k psi max in an N-Frame. But, a limited run of those in the Classic Series would be awesome.
I believe a talented Gunsmith could recylinder a 10mm GP-100 or S&W 610. I'm currently waiting on a custom 38-40 Super Redhawk.
It's the most underrated of the old hyphenated cartridges IMHO.
May and should be a great thread to follow.

A couple months ago Hamilton Bowen contacted me about a 6" M28 barrel that he had rebored by Jim Dubell at Clearwater and a M28 cylinder that he had re-chambered to .38/40. He had put the parts together forr an un-named gunsmith frriend of his that no longer had interest in the project. I probably paid too much for them but had them sent along anyhow. There are a couple smiths that would do the assembly of the parts for me. Just trying to slow down a little and here comes another project in my lap... If I do it should I keep the barrel 6"? Been thinking my favorite barrel length of 5" might be nice. I have a Jim Stroh S&W front sight that would work well if I did shorten it up...

I'd keep it 6" but 100% your choice. Sounds like you have the makings of one super interesting gun.
Greg, please keep us posted on this project.

The 544 Wagon Train... Just saw one for sale at Hoffman's In Newington Connecticut about two weeks ago. See them on GunBroker quite often...
Nice thing is that they were 5" standard underlug...
No clue what loads they will take...
I believe it was $900...
There are 5 for sale on GunBroker. Average actual selling price if it has the presentation case is a grand..

You'll be able to shoot those atomic level loads Linebaugh talks about in the Redhawk. I had a Harton bisley with an oversized cylinder that would handle those loads. I think it was a 5 shot gun. Maybe Zeus remembers...

I've got a 5-Shot Blackhawk that is awesome. The Redhawk should easily handle the same loads.
I'm in the planning stage of a 5-Shot Midframe Flattop too. That will be a 30k gun.
Really hope you finish this gun...

I keep thinking of building a mid frame Flat Top Ruger Bisley with a round butt grip and a 4ā barrel in 38/40 just cuz. Run a 180gr bullet at 900ā1000fps for a fun load and ramp it up if desired. I doubt I ever would, I have other guns for that. Iām mean why really lean on a 38/40 when I have a 41 mag in the safe?
