I'm not one to take resale into consideration when it comes to guns, but I took a shellacking on the last 38/40 I sold. A USFA/Turnbull 7.5" 3/4 engraved gun with ivory Persinger stocks NIB went for about $2200 or so.

So many people underestimate the Old 38-40. For the handloader, it's a dream cartridge.
Will match the 41 Magnum with +P loads in the correct gun.
But, people are peculiar. I've had reloaders who regularly use Hot 45 Colt Loads advise me to never modernize the 38-40 and 44-40 because it might make it into the wrong gun. It's difficult to even respond to such statements.

I shouldn't have sold that gun... It was a good reminder that what is popular on this forum with maybe 50 people on-board may not be that way in the real world. The .41 Special is a good example. Lotsa' people talk but when the money comes into it...crickets.

Most people who are willing to spend the bucks on a custom gun will want that custom built to their specs. Actually, I completely understand that...

This is true, but most of these customs sell quickly on the secondary market. Especially if they're not chambered in one of a few calibers that don't get much attention from the market at large. I don't have a real affinity for the 41 magnum but thought long and hard about buying Bushog's 41 because he was darn near giving it away. It was a very nicely done gun that would have gone quicker/higher if it was a 44 or 45.

I've always been a little retarded. I'll pay much more for a nice 32-20, 38-40 or 44-40 than a 454 Casull, 475 Linebaugh, etc.
Almost all my Clements Guns have been obscure calibers.

With three sons, all avid shooters and two handloaders, I worry not with where my toys (guns and cars) will land. In fact, I am more than pleased to own what I own and continue to buy more as I can leave a cash inheritance or have it supplemented by proper Smith's, Ruger's and customs that they will not be able to buy thirty years from now.

My latest custom is a 38 special which I imagine I'll take a hit on if I ever sell it, so what do I know If you just ship it straight to me you won’t have to worry about a long drawn out process to get rid of it. That is an extremely nice .38, possibly the nicest yet.

Not to be funny or anything (I too would like a nice 4-5" double action 38-40 to match my Buckeye SA Ruger) but for sheer equal power S&W already has made the 610 in 10mm. Reloads with cast 200 grain bullets at 1,200 fps are really not too shabby. And factory loads go from mild (Federal equal to 40 S&W) to very stout (Buffalo Bore). Plus built in speed loaders using the full moon clips. Just room for thought.

I want a 38/40 myself because it is old and odd not because there are not better options out there now because obviously there are. But that is just no fun...
