I’m too pragmatic to buy such close “duplicates” in caliber. I do however go with the short barreled/longer barreled theme, a holster gun and a dedicated hunting gun. I prefer to jump from .41 to .45, and from .45 to .50/.51

It’s about what you can have I shot a LOT of them ……… 41 to 500…….whatever you pick up You can get enough HP out of any of them for 95% of the time. Bad weather? SS Long walk. A S&W 296 or 325 Friends coming over….what do they want or you have he most loaded for. Some times a snubbie or a compact 1911 for unsocial occasions …..or Bo h Like clothes…….dress appropriately according to your style

Two quotes from Ross Seyfried in the May 1988 G&A article introducing the 475 Linebaugh.
“I think my best impression of the 500 is that it was a little sluggish “
“Where we felt we were pushing the 500 to make it go, all we had to do to the 475 was stand back and let it run”
This was the main reason I chose .475 L for my big bore “snot knocker”. I have never regretted my choice nor saw a need for a 500.

Thanks, Reflex, your piece there is a real beaut. Made for real duty. And looking forward to shooting with you, Trapr. So much to learn about guns and holsters and sights and technique. What a fun and deep rabbit hole this is… It is a slippery slope your on!! and This site is full of enablers. enjoy your journey! Enabling makes the world go round. I am already thinking of another master plan gun.

I don’t need to be enabled or encouraged, I’m just an old GunWhore, and can’t get enough. I’ll shoot heavy, slow rounds, or lighter , faster rounds, in each caliber I have. There all good, some are just better than the rest.

Just my preliminary thinking is something along the lines of the custom 500 JRH BFR that Magnum Research built for Laramy Miller. He has used that gun on several heads of game including bear and elk. I don't know if it was among the guns stolen with his truck in Colorado. I like the Sedgely latch on a BFR. Truth is I like everything about the gun. Here is a picture of it. Do I need it? NO. Has that ever stopped me? NOPE!

Helluva subject…….ford vs chevy……..blonde vs brunette Most has been said……. Both shoot well Both can go mild to wild I’ll have a 500 to go trapesing around and stainless for abuse. A 500 Max because God put me on this earth to wing shoot geese one time. I know …..I know And I’ll continue building a 475 Max for lower pressure and ease of shooting. Brass grip frame. 3 people working on this one. And the 475 John built for me near 30 years ago as a kindness. And we reworked two years ago. It gets shot. But I’ll be buried with the last one. With a JRJ knife a friend/mentor gave me today. Stage 3 and going downhill he is. It’s been to Africa 7 times. My thoughts Enjoy all you can. Those are deep and profound thoughts. Nothing but love and respect for the sentiments and kind wishes to your friend at the end of their journey. We are losing someone close to us today here and it puts things in perspective, whatever that may be to each individual on any given day. Bottom line is as you said, Aciera, “enjoy all you can.” I’m on my way to send off a NM Blackhawk to Bowen for the Kenai treatment, and a blued Bisley to get converted into a Nimrod .500 Linebaugh. Because I think I like blondes AND brunettes. And one must enjoy all you can (responsibly). Best wishes to all here and all their people, wherever they’re at on their respective journeys.

Bowen has my blued Bisley now and should be in the works soon. I’m exited to get such a powerful performer in a lower pressure round (compared to the .475). That being said, I have only been able to order a Hornady die set which has many a complaint around it, brass is backordered and rare, and unsurprisingly cast bullets are not plentiful in variety. I was throughly forewarned about the bullets! RCBS and Redding don’t make .500L dies…. Wondering if I should change the order with Bowen to .475L or if I should try and stick it out and work with what I can find. It is a big investment to be short on supplies…

You're probably going to want to start casting your own if you don't already when you start launching over an ounce of lead with each shot. Hornady dies work fine once you get them set, but I am keeping my eyes open for a carbide set. You will have the same component problem with a 475 as well since most companies are abandoning the 480. For the 500L, I recommend at least 3 molds to cast your own with. A good 350-370gr for plinking, fun, or deer/pig popping. 400-430gr regular hunting mold for the bear/elk/moose size stuff. Lastly a 480-540gr mold for the nasty big boys. My personal choices are the Accurate 51-355H (my design),LBT 410 wfn and a 435 lfn, and the MP 511-525. That 511-525 is also a real deer hammer with the large hp cast from pc'd 25-1 at 900fps

Minutes before your post I emailed Bowen to request that we switch from .500L to .475L for a couple reasons. Brass, bullets, and to a lesser degree factory ammo. I do reload, but I don’t cast and don’t have time or space for that yet. I’ve been able to purchase a .500L Hornady die as mentioned and am backordered with Starline brass and will be purchasing a .500L Redhawk from Trapr this summer which I am stoked about. But it after much deliberation it didn’t make sense to me to have two very special Bowen builds in the same cartridge when I am still interested in both of them and am finding .475L brass and carbide dies and projectiles so easily. I figure I’ll load the .500L Redhawk similar to Trapr for defense and close range big game hunting, and experiment with the Nimrod as my dedicated hunt anything in the world revolver. Can’t tell you how much time I have spent going back and forth mulling this over, like way too much….

My 500L and 475L Redhawks are a Reeder Mammoth and a Mastodon. I can tell you from experience that even with his reshaped grip frame recoil is brutal with the heavy rounds. Currently they are loaded with a 355 at 1300 for the 500 and a 375 at 1100 for the 475. Much kinder to the hand. All out heavies are saved for the BFRs
