I have two 475's and one 500 and I like the 500 best, 450 grs at 1200-1300 fps and 25-30 kpsi. All the thump I will ever desire and it doesn't beat me or the gun much.

I used to roll my eyes when Taffin wrote about the hand problems he developed from shooting big kickers - until I started shooting a BFR in .475 Linebaugh! The .44 Magnum is mild in comparison. When I let someone try one of my 475s it's usually my 5 1/2 inch Bisley with micarta grips by Dustin Linebaugh. The Bisley grip is much more comfortable to shoot. Most comment that it's not too bad and it isn't - but they are only shooting one or two rounds. I guess I'm not as tough as I was thirty years ago but I always limit myself to 20 rounds a day with the full power stuff. I'll bet John L. will push you to get a .500 Linebaugh if you ask his opinion, and he will try to steer you away from a 5-shot 45 Colt.

.... I'll bet John L. will push you to get a .500 Linebaugh is you ask his opinion, and he will try to steer you away from a 5-shot 45 Colt.... My thought exactly. Why not a .475 and a .500 instead? I mean if you don't like one or the other or both, it's not like you won't be able to get your money out of them selling them. In the end unless you are blessed to be able to hunt around the world or dangerous game in the NA or Bison, these big guns are for fun and bragging rights. With full power loads, they certainly are not fun to shoot all day. I too limit myself to 20-25 rounds per shooting session. And I LIKE big recoil. I think it's fun. But after 15-20 rounds I start to get the shakes. In the end, there is nothing I can't hunt with a very strong .45 Colt in NA, including the big bears. But loaded right, they sure are fun! ;D

Resurrecting an old thread here to ask what the OP ultimately went with? And also to say that I am having a similar dilemma, trying to decide what to have Bowen build in a blued Bisley for me, .475L or .500L, and struggling with that. Not sure why when it ultimately isn’t a necessary dilemma, but leaning towards the .500L as FA still builds .475L and Trapr has privately made a very good argument for the .500L being a great choice for power, on animal effect, and controllability. He’s generously offered to even let me shoot some of his big bores to get a feel for them which I look forward to. The decision to send a gun or two in to Bowen is hastened by the fact that he won’t be working in his current capacity for too much longer so it feels imperative to me to get on it asap. Back to the OP, it would be awesome to know what you got and how you like it and perhaps where you’ve gone from there in the last 14yrs. Best regards to all and have a great day

The claimed advantage of the 475 is increased penetration over the 500. That's true with the more traditional weight bullets. It doesn't hold if the 500L is loaded to it's potential. The 500 with 475-540gr bullets will penetrate as deeply as the 420gr 475 in game based upon my experiences. Both will penetrate deeper than most rifle rounds. My personal preference is for the 500L. There's no elephant, rhino, or hippo in the US. A 525gr at 950fps will handle any bear. I push mine harder, but that 950 load gives follow up shots very quickly. Especially from the Redhawk. But even at the lower velocity, I have never had a bullet not exit game.

I'm not sure where you're located but by your handle I would guess Wyoming. If so you could always go to the Big Bore shoot in Cody in June. I'm sure you will get to eyeball and handle plenty of big big bores there. Lots of good guys go to that shoot.
Personally I would lean towards the 500. Components aren't off the shelf for either one of them but I do feel like you'll find more components for the 500 over the 475. But like many of the other people here once you get one, it's somewhat likely you're going to get the other one.

Hamilton is building me a blue Redhawk in .480 now.

Good old enabler Zeus help me get a Linebaugh built .475 while waiting on John to build my .500. I can't bring myself to part with either of them. You might as well send Bowen two guns.

Any idea if the Big Bore Shoot is happening this year? I did reach out to Dustin recently to introduce myself and beg him to put me on his list to build for someday. Had a great little text conversation and he seems like a really good guy with an eye on quality and friendship over quantity and fame.

And I like the idea of sending off multiple funs to Dustin (if and when that is an option, fingers crossed) or Bowen. Financially irresponsible? Maybe, but there’d be plenty of time to sell off a few other guns in the meantime to help raise funds…

And if anyone has what I’m looking for but is also hard on cash or temporarily insane, give me a shout.

One of the members has a Bowen 500 for sale on GunBroker. As for Dustin I wouldn't plan on having that anytime soon even if you sent him a build. He has way more demand for his work than he has the capacity to fill it. That said you may want to talk with Bowen, Huntington, John Powers, Ronnie Wells, etc. and see who could get you what you want. I sent you a message about the big bore shoot. You can call that gentleman and see if they're going to run the shoot or not.

Helluva subject…….ford vs chevy……..blonde vs brunette
Most has been said……. Both shoot well Both can go mild to wild
I’ll have a 500 to go trapesing around and stainless for abuse. A 500 Max because God put me on this earth to wing shoot geese one time. I know …..I know And I’ll continue building a 475 Max for lower pressure and ease of shooting. Brass grip frame. 3 people working on this one. And the 475 John built for me near 30 years ago as a kindness. And we reworked two years ago. It gets shot. But I’ll be buried with the last one. With a JRJ knife a friend/mentor gave me today. Stage 3 and going downhill he is. It’s been to Africa 7 times.
My thoughts Enjoy all you can.
