But they are so pretty ! Yup, if kids or dogs around, those gotta go. Think we have more timber rattlers than copperheads at camp. Had a young man catch one down at the river and carry it up the trail a couple miles and into camp to show me. He didn't know what it was. Kevin..put the snake down. Kevin..PUT THE SNAKE DOWN ! Bang. It was cool and the snake lethargic.

The copperheads were shot 12 or so years back. Dad, my son and I were on hunting club property shooting by a creek. We also had our two dogs with us. The Border Collie mix started barking hysterically trying to tell me about the snakes in the brush nearby. When I finally located the camouflaged snakes, there appeared to only be one but the upper half of the snake was vertical. Hmmmm, front sight, press. Looked again and saw what I thought was the same snake still there. Ok, let's do it right this time...front sight, press. When I went over to see them, there were two headshot copperheads. The Border Collie was completely satisfied with the outcome. She did her job well.

Burning some cattail sloughs in a hayfield of ours this evening. This unfortunate bugger got caught in the crossfire! Hound found him in the middle of the slough and alerted me to his presence. Quills were pretty well burnt off so the dog was safe. Not sure if he tried to bite him or not, but he has gotten quilled before.

Thank You Doug ! Wow, considering the pic is of a pic and then texted across country and uploaded to..am quite happy with the quality. I used to be a bit better than average hand with a camera. Photographed steeple chase, cars and motorcycle races for friends, wildlife and outdoor stuff and a couple weddings back in the day. I never made the jump to the digital age. We killed two of these Timber rattlers an hour apart a few feet from the new camp building on the mowed grass. Figured they came out from under some stacked, stored building materials to sun. Do believe the Bulldog from outta the back pocket of the Carhart shorts was full of 185gr Penn DEWC's on 7grs of Unique. The snake was a solid 6 footer until I took a little off the top. The other one maybe 4'6" or so. We had kids and dogs in camp. They did not go to waste, skinned and skins kept and the "tenderloins",the ribbons of meat from along either side of the spine on the outside was sauteed in butter in a cast iron skillet. Maybe it was bacon grease ? But amazing. Somewhere between scallops and frog legs for taste and texture.

That is not a deer/hog, you need to clean your glasses ! LOl., but the beast does look healthy and well furred.

Here are a picture from todays hunt for some black grouse. I were following a old logging road locking for some birds on the clearings, i had been walking for about 30 min when i got a glimpse of two black grouse sitting in the top of a pine, after some manoeuvre i got in position fora a 155m shot, the remaining birds did not fly to fara away of and they kindly gave me another opportunity even if it was a longer shot this time at 190m Happy Hunting Mathias

Grouse, YUM ! Here, the "ruffed" grouse is delicately flavored and some might say even bland compared to pheasant etc.. Then the spruce grouse, none by me but I've seen them in Montana, are said by some to be "quite strong" in flavor due to diet. How do your black grouse fare on the table ?
