First ground squirrel of the year. Now we are covered in snow again. Turned the nice day into an adventure though

We have chickens and goats at our place and of course chickens means mice. In the Spring I spend time shooting the new crop of nice with a Ruger Bearcat and using the Aguila “Colibri” or “Super Colibri” rounds. I shoot inside an enclosed barn with a dirt floor as a backdrop and I use ear protection but these rounds are pretty quiet. They use a primer mixture only, no gunpowder to propel their bullets. Tonight’s haul was four mice and the upside is that the chickens get a treat of mice tomorrow. I’ll try to add my photos later.

LOVE seeing pics of the kids enjoying the outdoors! My most special memories in the woods were with my Mom and Dad, now with kids of my own.
I killed a porcupine once just south of Enchanted Rock State Park, Texas. Point blank with a 22 K-Hornet. Never doing that again. Blew quills off of him and all over me. None penetrated my skin but I was picking them out of my hunting clothes for two days. Most were noticed when I sat down for a break or to glass the next granite column for Aoudad and Blackbuck.

Last spring turkey season I shot a.... porcupine. So THIS spring turkey season I shot a.... porcupine. I'm beginning to see a pattern here. This little girl had been chewing up the sawn timber siding of the cabin lately, she had the misfortune of being caught out too early, just as we pulled in, coming back from town. Unlike the last one, this one met the frying pan. Another turkey season without turkeys. Saw some hens, heard nor saw no toms. But... Tuesday evening I walked down the road to try to get some pictures of the beaver that's moved into my neighbor's small pond. I got there with no sign of it, just as it started to rain. So I headed back to the cabin to stay dry. As I topped the muddy driveway, this sucker was heading down the trail leading down the hill from an overgrown field. She too was no doubt heading back to the cabin (underneath) to stay dry. When I saw her at about 40-45 yards, I ducked behind a tree and waited in ambush. I was hoping she'd come right down into the yard for a clear shot. No luck, at about 30-35 yards she hung a left through the baby forrest of saplings. Waiting and waiting, straining to see the front sight and waiting for an opening to shoot through. I'd like to wow you with some great shooting and a one shot stop, but it quickly escalated into a 13 shot running "gun battle". lol A 60+ yard chase through the woods. After I lost the light of the open yard, I couldn't see the sights at all. A sprint through some thick nasty maze of saplings, up hill, over a stone fence, then into dark pines where I need my little flashlight to see it or the sights. Yep, 13 shots.. that means a reload. But in reality I made SEVERAL reloads. I shot 2 times and the surprise was blown. lol I got to practice my "tactical reloads with retention". I reloaded, I ran up about 10 yards closer and fired maybe 3 times flat footed, one time running, then swapped mags back. Basically any time I felt I had less rounds in the gun than in the other mag, I swapped. Now I'm shooting in near dark, part flash blinded with muzzle flash, can't see the rear sights, only hints of the fiber optic front, so I have no idea where I'm hitting. But I know I hit it at least three times, maybe four! These suckers die hard. Three times I saw it physically get rocked/moved by the shot then go flat like it was dead, three times it got back up and kept going. One mag was full of factory Golden Sabers, the other handloads with an LBT style cast bullet. This proves I need to get out more. Afterwards I just kept thinking about what the replacement cost of the seven Golden Saber's would be, if there were actually any to buy!

Looking at it, it looks like there is very little body hidden amongst the hair. Much like a skunk, it amazes me how small a skunk actually is compared to hairdo.

Am glad to see this thread pop back up ! I'd forgotten it. I've had some running gun battles with porkies. Often in undies..the chewing on the building wakes you up.
