Shot a damn rattlesnake
On the doorstep
With the 17 Remington
It gets dark earlyish here now, and I had unloaded a couple of bales of alfalfa and grass for the animals and was carrying some things from the truck to bring inside.
Approaching the door, I heard the buzzworm and looked down to see the nasty little bastard right there at the doorstep.
No gun on belt.
I had to get through the dark to the back entrance of the workshop and through all the things and feel my way to a solution quickly before the rattlesnake went anywhere. I didn't want it to slither anywhere near or into the house. Found the slender muzzle of the 17 Remington and grabbed a loaded box magazine for it (happier than ever that I'd done the detachable mag conversion) and got it loaded and ready on the way back to the front of the house.
Snake was still acting up at the doorstep as I approached and guesstimated a safe firing line and sight picture
Splat..!
15gr NTX bullet at well over 4000fps pretty much atomized the midsection, sent the tail section flying a few feet one way, and the front end a different direction.
Unconventional tool for the job, but the results were spectacular.

Unconventional tool, yes, but I give bonus points to ballistic solutions to household difficulties. You did not lower yourself to using something crass, like a shovel !

Son and I shot some today, .44 Special Flattop,.22, Encore 15 in 30-06 with brake,7-30 Waters,.222,38 special . 7BR XP with a beautiful figured thumbhole stock that DID NOT fit my hand at all, sure was purty though. Beautiful day upper 70's partly sunny. I took along my .45 Colt 4 5/8th Blackhawk but some fool left the red dot turned on and ran the battery down. NO prizes given for guessing who the fool was.

Shot the 10” 41 mag bisley with the newly mounted 2x6 weaver. Dead on with the windage out of the box ,just had to lower elevation a few clicks! Also the s&w 625 ! Increasingly become one of my favorites! Ps.! Forgot how dirty Bullseye powder was. Really dirty out of a revolver!

I have 2.5x8 scopes on both of them.

Over the last couple of years I've picked up some rifle parts. Old Rem 700 LA. Timmy trigger. H-S stock. Leica ER 4-20 scope. Talley rings. Pac Nor fluted sporter Remage barrel in 284 win throated for 168 Bergers. All the small parts and tools needed for assembly. Sinclair bipod. Armageddon bag. This is my first bolt action rifle assembly job, no gunsmith. required. Finding overlap in specialty pistols and rifles for shooting techniques and positions to improve my performance with both. I believe the neck was cut for 6.5-284 necked up to 284, but since I started with Norma 284 brass neck turning was necessary. I'm liking expanding with the K&M mandrels. Ammo goes together so much smoother neck turned and mandrel expanded. First three shots shown and the rest landed where expected as I adjusted the scope for zero. I'd say this one is ready to hunt, but there's pistols for that.
