If I'm reading keiths ledger correctly, in 1972 he valued #5 at $2000 and it sold for $70,000. In 1972 he valued a engraved Champlin rifle at $5,000 and it sold for $20,000. Which one was undervalued yesterday. That Champlin went for 1/2 what it would cost to build today, Bowen would build you a #5 better in every measurable way to the original for $15,000.

It saddens me to see the collection broke up but I am hoping htey landed in good hands. I can't believe #5 went that cheap. If the gent from Alabama got Corbetts rifle you will see it go hunting on TV........ One can hope! I enjoyed watching him hunt with the rifles of Selous, Fletcher Jamieson and Hemingway. Wasn't that the three?

Much as I revere Elmer Keith, I'd probably rather have the Bowen recreation.

Bill Jones is a collector and hunter who acquired rifles once owned and used by Frederick Courteney Selous, Ernest Hemingway and Fletcher Jamieson. He returned them to Africa to hunt with them and it was featured in a two parts of the Dallas Safari Club series, "Tracks Across Africa" with Ivan Carter.

I don't usually like hunting shows but I really enjoy that one. I had 50 of them recorded on the DVR before I started catching up with it.

I bought the auction catalogs. At first pass I would say they are worth owning. Great photos.

He paid something like 340,000.00 for Hemingway's rifle and carried it to Africa. He is in possesion of several of the rifles that I grew up reading about and he hunts with them. He seems to a class act. Someone that not only can afford those guns but cherishes like I would. Too bad there aren't enough tigers left for the Corbett rifles buyer to take it on a hunt for tiger and gaur!

The thing that surprised me the most was the collection of derringers and tiny pocket revolvers. Some of the Remington revolvers went well below estimates and most of the Sharps rifles seemed to go real cheap.
