I have a nice collection of African hunting books,I really enjoy reading (convinced me to never go to Africa:)). I just recently got Horned Death by John Burger. I have all of Peter Capstick's books, plus most of his collectors series by C.H.Stigand,Dennis D Lyell,et al. I've little disposable income, but I would like to pick up another book. I'm currently thinking of John Taylors Maneaters and Marauders or Brian Hernes White Hunters: The Golden Age of African Safari's. Can anyone tell me if these titles are any good? Or maybe some other suggestions?
Thanks!

twbryan / neighbor,
BLUF: Send me a good mailing address and give me a week or two to finish reading it and I'll send you a copy of John Taylor's "Maneaters and Marauders;" no charge.
I too am an avid reader of African hunting books and would hate to see a lack of disposable income get in the way of some good armchair adventure. Besides that, some months ago a member here answered my query for a good source for .357 Herrett brass. He sent me some of his home-brewed brass for free. He wouldn't accept payment, but preferred I pass on the good deed...so here I am.

I read "Horn of the Hunter" by Robert Ruark once a year without fail.
Also "The Old Man and the Boy" which is not at all about Africa. Ruark tells the tale of him growing up under his grandfathers guidance - it reminds me of me and my grandpa.

I read "The Old Man and The Boy" at least once a year, usually in the fall before hunting season. "Horn of the Hunter" is a classic.

"Horn of the Hunter" is Ruark's book about his first African safari, with Harry Selby as his P.H.

"Selby was one heck of a guy"
Actually, Harry Selby still is a heck of a guy. He lives in Maun, Botswana and occasionally posts on accuratereloading.com . I wrote a paper at the Army War College in 2007 on the Mau Mau Rebellion and Mr Selby was kind enough to allow me to interview him and use him as a reference. He also gave me some autographs so I could stick one in the gun stock of my .458 Win Mag as a good luck charm. I'll put one in the book I'm sending you -- you could use it as a cool book mark.
