I don't know who DPris is but the guys over there tend to believe him. I meant to type 5 shot in my original post, not sure how I missed that detail before I hit send. Anyway this is a link to the thread I was reading. rugerforum.net/ruger-double-action/177745-ruger-gp100-44-special.htmlDean

DPris is short for Denis Prisby, he's a gunwriter and has some connections inside the Ruger innersanctum. He usually speaks with the "goods" to back it up!
It's been my experience that if DPris said it, I pay attention! He's a fellow Idahoan and I've followed his articles for years. He's also a revolver geek!

Nephew just checked single action trigger pull of two new handguns.
Ruger Sp101 5lb 6oz S&W 69 3lb 2oz
Said the difference felt even bigger...
I have to ask... If they're roughly the same size, what advantage would a Ruger GP 44 spec have over a SW 69 44 mag?

I believe the part about the difference feeling greater and possibly due to the M69 being a bigger and heavier gun. The second part.. it would say Ruger on the revolver. I would have been tempted except that I want more terminal performance than the Bulldog, hence the 44mag chambering.

I'm intrigued by a GP-44 and if the 69 didn't exist I'd have been all over it. I'd think a 5 shot GP could handle the Keith load with no problem at all giving you way more gun than a Bulldog. It'll be a consideration for me if they put the lawyer label on the bottom where I don't have to look at it.

Will be leaving for deer camp in an hr or so. The M69 will be the always on board gun. I can hear the Bulldog down the hall, whining, from here.

I have carried my M69 since the start of Deer season in September. While I have not used it yet on a deer. I will say this. It has been a great packing revolver. In my Simply Rugged Sourdough it just disappears.

Oooh that's bad. The fact that they were the same barrel length as my Mountain Gun was the excuse I've been using for not buying one. This could be trouble.

If they're roughly the same size, what advantage would a Ruger GP 44 spec have over a SW 69 44 mag? My S&W 69 was no where near 3lb 2oz. It was a hair over 5 in single action. Even with a 13lb wolff return spring its 3.5lbs.

I think I got lucky on that 69. I had him order both the 69 and sp101 327 some time ago yet haven't taken time to pick them up. I asked him if either needed spring kits and he said the sp was a little rough, but might smooth up and I probably wouldn't want to touch the 69. Then he measured the pulls to check.

In my mind this size gun just screams to be a .44 Special, BUT with the 69 you could carry Specials exclusively in it, load Mags down to Special levels and still have the capability of carrying/shooting full house 44 Mags in it. ETA: I don't remember if I have ever handled a 69 at the LGS but ever time I pick up the Ruger Match Champion I start dreaming about a similar .44 Special. Dean

A GP100 in MC configuration in a 44 Spl would get my attention if it was tuned to MC specs. Better yet a Wiley Clapp 3" in 44 Spl, see it--buy it!

I know the M69 is not the first handgun to have the two piece barrel assembly, but it's my first of that type. So, has there been any issue with or worries over corrosion starting in-between the barrel and shroud ? A concern to anyone here ?
