Groo here A PPP requires you to evaluate what you will do and expect from it. 1# How much horsepower do you need, the more power - the larger and heaver the gun. 2# How heavy a gun can you carry, the older you get the lighter the gun [ or you get smarter] 3# How long a barrel , will you hunt with it or use it for defense or close range? If for defense a short barrel is fine [ also fixed sights] 4# The larger the hole in the barrel, the less you loose when you chop it. 5# How will you carry it, Sholder or chest , hip with heavy belt, ccw?
My PPP are all short barrels as a hunting gun will double as the packing pistol if no rifle. I use Nframe 3in S&W's in 357 ,41,44,or 45 acp , in single action I have a Vaquero in 44 4 5/8in and a 454 same .[ but there is a short 500 s&w somewhere] My fave is my Horvath custom conversion Mondago 41 mag and a 4 in 475 L on a Vaquero bisley.

I think the notion of a "perfect" packin' pistol is dependent on who you are, where you are, and what you need. As I tell my students, as with all difficult questions, the answer is "it depends."
In the summer when I'm just fishing or walking in the woods (north Alabama), the only things I really have to worry about are snakes, wild dogs, coyotes and the occasional hog. None of these really bother me, and none of them shoot back. So, my PPP is a NMBH in 41mag with some fairly hot FMJs (more for the hogs than anything else). I'm having it worked over by Gallagher right now (Bisley-ized, free spin pawl, new wenge grips, Bowen rear sights and a Weigand front base with a fiber optic insert, full action job). It's accurate, handy and I'm confident in hitting what I want.
Now, when hunting season kicks in, my PPP is my Poppa's Colt S/70 45ACP Govt Model. Why? After a couple of run-ins with poachers (the most recent occasion was a particularly belligerent guy, and I had my 13 year old nephew with me), I want something that is accurate, handy, and I'm confident with...and that fires/reloads quicker than a single action revolver.
Just my thoughts.

John Taffin's appellation "Perfect Packin Pistol" has taken on a life of its own. For packing power while getting in and out of vehicles, working around equipment, chainsaws and such, a four-inch N-frame Smith works smooth as cream. Likewise, a Blackhawk/SBH Ruger with 4-5/8" bbl, or Freedom Arms Casull Model 1983 in 4-3/4-inch. I would throw in----the primal compact powerhouse----the Colt Peacemaker.
My personal weight limit of 3 lbs. defines portability as surely as barrel length. From this base I include a barrel slightly longer, 5-1/2 inch, or shorter. But I do not include more weight. With proper leather, robust performance in an altogether healthy arrangement. David Bradshaw

Whit, those grips are stunning. I've got mixed emotions re the PPP. When out of the house, I carry two guns. One is a Kahr CW40 (loaded w/Double Tap 200gr WFN) w/laser in my left front pocket. Most of the time the other will be a 4" S&W 329 PD .44 Mag. On occasion, I'll substitute a 396 Mt Lite .44 Spcl for the 329 PD. The "mixed emotions" part comes from the fact that these guns have no "sole" -- comforting and useful yes, "sole" not so much. If I had to pick one gun that would do it all for me (easy packing, compact, accurate, fun to shoot (mild), powerful (wild) and aesthetically pleasing, it would be the FA97 4 1/4" .45 Colt shown below. It shoots deep seated 270 SAA CSWCs over 8.0gr HP38 (900 fps) comfortably and close to the same POI as 320gr RCBS or Lee over 22.0 gr H110 (about 1,150 fps) -- mild to wild with. It has seen over 25,000 rounds and is still a pleasure to shoot/carry. . . . This is a 386 (357) but exactly same as .44 Spcl 396 shown with FA M97 3 1/2" .45 Colt. . . The S&W 329 PD .44 Mag . FWIW, Paul

my 3.75" montado 45Colt showing additional work: ramped the face & regulated front sight for windage, then filed down blade to match the load, and serrated it. blackened front ramp and rear sight area with matte black paint. plus radiused all edges. added action job. removed lock system. removed billboard warning in barrel. installed custom belt mt colt-style extra-short base pin. fitted stainless crescent ejector. i left the cheese-grater grips on 'cause i like 'em, but i did radius all edges. its carried a custom milt sparks HSR basketweave 3.75" holster, loaded it with 265 gr Cast Performance WFNGC on top of 8.5 unique.
