Have not seen much discussion on this lately. And being a relative newbie I was wanting to hear some opinions. I would like to keep the discussion to a more outdoor related PPP. On you hip wile hunting, fishing, camping, woods stomping sidearm. I typically carry a 4 5/8" stainless super Blackhawk 44 mag in the Mag-na-port Predator conversion for this. It has served me well the last 15 years. Never even thought about anything else till I found this place. Now I am thinking about having a new piece. Have a few questions.
1. What about a 4" barrel. Does the 5/8" of a make that much difference in carry. I do like the looks though.
2. Medium Frame? I have never held a med frame gun and I know I will have to before I make a real decision. But are they that much lighter and smaller?
3. Fixed sight? Get one load and regulate or adjustable.
4. How about round butt frames?
5. What about the bisley grip? Have heard some say it was too big for a PPP.

For me, my PPP is a 629 Mountain Gun.

I think the Perfect Packing Pistol is completely subjective -- what may be good for one, may not be good for another. For an out-of-the-box revolver, for me at least, the 5 1/2-inch Ruger Bisley in .45 Colt is about as close to perfection as you can get. Bisley means control when recoil gets stiff, the barrel length is just right, and what's not to like about the .45 Colt chambering? So, that is what constitutes the Perfect Packing Pistol for me.

The most important thing in the quest for the perfect packing pistol, is to never actually find it.

Why not have a smaller caliber like a 327...

Mine is an old Flattop Ruger 44 Mag cut to 4 5/8". With the original aluminum grip frame and plastic grips it is handy as hell to carry. I load it with MBW 280 gr WFN at 1000 fps and it is what I hike around with at my place in Idaho.

Always an interesting subject,PPP ! Not only does it mean different things to different folks here, I'll say it means different things to me, on different days. I have 3 revolvers that to me can fit the category on different days. Factors are wether am around home or afield, and the weather, also if it needs to be concealed. The concealed part maybe doesn't fit the PPP thing though. I'll admit the PPP idea to me is about field carry but roles from defense to hunting, to plinking have to be met too. Closer to home, warmer weather have me reaching for the Bulldog or the NM Vaq Sheriff. As it gets cooler or afield, the NM Vaq Sheriff or its bigger brother the NM FT 5.5" . Caliber is a whole 'nother thing. What you choose has to fit your anticipated needs on a given day. Two legged varmints or a black bear are my biggest threats, and deer our biggest game here. So unless specifically going out to hunt deer, am content with .44spec's. for PPP duty. If leaving the house specifically to hunt deer, it would more likely mean the .44mag SBH gets packed. stevemb

A lot depends on where you live. Live around the big bears and most opt for larger calibers. If the revolver will be used just for carrying and not for hunting and brownies or grizzlies are not a concern then I think Rugers 3.75 inch .44 mag Bisley in stainless was about as good as they come.

My opinionated answers: 1. The 5/8" makes no practical difference in velocity, blast, or packing. 2. A medium frame is quite a bit lighter and smaller than a Ruger NM Blackhawk - not much lighter than a SW M29, but a bit smaller - and insignificantly lighter and smaller than a SW M29 Mountain Gun. 3. I prefer adjustable. I have a hard time seeing factory fixed sights, especially those on single-actions, so adjustable sights are better for me - or I hog out the rear sight channel in the top strap and then have sights I can see. Yep, you will be stuck with one primary load, and likely a few other loads that shoot to similar points of aim. One often ends up with only one or two "go to" loads anyway so I don't see this as a handicap. 4. I don't own nor have I tried any round butted revolvers and don't know much about them except that they are ugly and made for girls. 5. The Bisley grip is not too big for packing, and they sure help tame felt recoil. I can shoot full power 44 Magnums with my Bisley gripped NMBH, but have trouble holding on to the same load being touched off in the standard NMBH grip. At the moment, and certainly not forever, I pack a 4 5/8" NMBH SS 45 Colt. It shoots good and I can see the sights. I am working on replacing it with the one pictured below, which is a 4 5/9" Bisley Vaquero 44 Magnum. But at the moment I can't see the sights well and it shoots to the left with my favorite load. I will hog out one side of the sight channel which will sight it in and also provide a much better sight picture. Have fun.

For the past year and half or so the gun that rides around on my hip everyday is a 4 5/8" New Model Flattop in 45 Colt/Autorim. It gets packed in a 120 (Threepersons) from Simply Rugged and I couldn't be happier with it whether out hunting, baling hay, wrenching on my truck, or any other activity I may do.
