regarding my 1885 highwall question on handloads:
looked up some 45-70 load data for ruger #3 350gr. bullet. they call out medium speed powders in a 22" barrel tested.
and so i bought some IMR3031. the load is 55gr for 1818fps and a max load of 61gr for 2016fps.
but my 1885 has a 28" barrel. would a much slower powder work? i have lots of 4831 on hand. but most books call out medium speed powders

I have not tried slow powders, you will run out of case capacity with nearly anything slower than 3031.

oh, ok. (upstairs light coming on) yes, you are correct. thank you.... * nice .405 u have okie hard to find brass? post edit: got the rifle out of jail & took it to the range. this gub kicks fk'n harder than my 45-70BFR!!! decent group using the stock sights @ 50 yards... but my shoulder hurts after 20 round. i'd like to keep this "western style" and have entertained the idea of adding some tang sights. comments??? on the other hand, to reduce recoil, adding a scope would also be attractive to add some weight....l or jusrt reduce the load. decisions, decisions.....

Ruger No. 3, .45-70, with my side sling modification - very comfortable to carry over the left shoulder, barrel pointed down (African Carry). Thought I'd join the 'Foot in the Picture Club' here...!

how about a 45-70 side by side double, just for some variety? one of my two... Stevens Crackshots... my other crackshot ( before the new barrel liner ) my lil .410 ( Contender 45 Colt .410 16" vent rib ) with a thumbhole carbine stock in camo laminate
